I Was Sent 120 Pornographic Photos On The Tube, Don't Tell Me It's My Fault
When a stranger's naked penis landed on my homescreen on Monday evening on a packed Victoria line to Brixton, it is fair to say I didn't find it particularly amusing.
Not only because I deleted Tinder months ago to avoid exactly this sort of interaction with the opposite sex, but because I was knee-deep in a Twitter thread about good dogs and it really broke my concentration.
What followed after the initial wave of confusion was the more-commonly associated feelings of being a victim of a sexual assault - phenomenal embarrassment and shame.
Compounded by the fact there was a young child and their mother sat within viewing distance of my phone.
So like any good millennial fighting the good fight against the patriarchy, I wasted no time in taking to social media to share the photograph, my disgust, and generally to look for some validation in feeling totally and utterly sick to my stomach.
They say a problem shared is a problem halved right? Wrong.
Being a journalist (and a female one who has the audacity to write technology stories at that) I should have known that I wasn't going to get the response I would have hoped for, but even so, I was shocked. Straight from the off, the discussion born from the thread didn't ask why this pervert felt such a degree of male entitlement that he had no qualms in imposing 120 photographs of his genitals on a stranger who was just commuting home from work.
No, instead it neatly circled around my privacy settings and why my AirDrop had been turned on, and left on, in the first place.
No doubt some of these contributors were well-meaning, genuinely helping out a woman who clearly leaves something to be desired in the cyber-security stakes (I've got a list of all my important passwords in the back of my diary too you know).
I'm sure some of them even thought that I didn't know what AirDrop was, or how to turn it off, and they were just helping a gal out.

Yep, completely her fault. If she is too naive to understand there is people like this out there, then she is an idiot
Don't join these sites, then this is never going to happen. The very fact it is well know there are these pervs out there, shows how utterly naive she really is. Plus she should have safe settings on, so this never happens.
The other aspect I suggest is she gets a life and not allow gagets to control her life
Zero sympathy. You want to venture into the new technology arena, then you have to learn of the possible consequencs of doing so.
So the reality is the people that send such pictures are idiots, but so are those exposing what they are watching on the tubes to others. It means you as the individual with the handset when sitting next to children not expose them to this, with your phone active and without safe settings.

Well no one wants a dick pic dropping into their laps when they are innocently perusing the net do they.....and if they do I doubt they would be complaining about it.
The blame is surely on the eejit who thinks a random stranger wants to gaze at multiple pics of his private parts
But surely, in the interest of self preservation, it helps if people actually look out for themselves too, so that would surely mean this lady should ensure her internet settings and phone numbers are kept private when joining dodgy sites.

I am a bit suspicious of stories like this...
Some sweet young urban princess claims to be a "journalist", is trawling the internet on her commute home, when she is "sexually abused" by some random pervert dumping some cyber-porn onto her unprotected account...
So what does she do -- what every innocent sweet young urban princess "journalist" does, being the experienced and enterprising Lois Lane wannabee that she professes to..
Jumps straight onto her favourite random "social media" site(s) and complains to countless random strangers -- only to be further rewarded for her noble endeavours with yet another random cyber-pervert then assailing her with a whole collection of more nudie pics this time ?
This story reads more like an advert' for other sweet young innocent urban princesses to go and try and repeat her experience..

Google has changed recently, giving content where none is invited. Y'all are familiar with Google's practice of expanding on your code when you make some inquiry or other. Often I'm trying to search merely the spelling of a word and I end up getting, say, dating services or "available women in their 30's in your community." Pimps!
Google has a practice in which they no longer give you answers, but take your inquiry as a cue to connect you, not to the answer, but to businesses at all related to your key word. I'm used to just trashing that stuff, but now that's all they give you. It's like they've become the yellow pages--if you remember those.

Xactly...same experience I've had. Now, imagine if for some reason the police subpoena your searches...your profile now has you as a pervert and possibly a cross-dresser on it.

Thats not the worst of it, I was once trying to google some shoes that had been shown on the shopping channel QVC. Being new to the internet I wasnt very good at following links, and somehow wandered onto a site dedicated to people who had a weird foot fetish.
It took me a while to realise this...I probably stayed on that site far longer than I should have, it had some nice shoes on it though.

Hilarious. We should start a thread on the results of Google Goofs. I'll bet everyone has at least one good story.

Re: I Was Sent 120 Pornographic Photos On The Tube, Don't Tell Me It's My Fault
this is the problem with 99% of tech writer they have ZERO business advising anyone about technology
forget about the dick pics
her Phone is Now essentially a cesspool of viruses, keyloggers and spyware
Because she is too Stupid to setup her phones settings.
And which due to her selfish stupidity and Oblivious attitude to cyber security she will definitely spread to her friends and family
she barely has business using a Smartphone if she is that irresponsible and it is completely Unethical for her to be giving advice on technology
this is the equivalent of a 'Mechanic' that knows nothing abut cars doing a safety check on a Vehicle.
and also Leaving their house Unlocked and wondering why they were robbed. surely the thief is to blame?
they also have basically made copies of other peoples house keys and left them on the street with some notes attached so people can see whose house it will open.

that is a poor comparison, because...YES the thief IS to blame, the thief is a parasite that needs destroying, the thief is against all an ordered society stands for

LOL and the dude sending unsolicited Dick pics is totally what an ordered society stands for
and Meh
the average thief is not so bad, more Moral and better for society than most politicians and 'CEOs of multinationals'
I totally Disagree a Thief is EVERYTHING our society truly is and represents, he makes Maximum Profit and that's all that matter according to our laws and Right Wing Political position.
the Thief exists because of the situations society allows.
