Forum friends and foes - where are they now?
Most of us have been around various forums for seemingly ages, but it occurred to me how many great and not so great posters have disappeared into the ether, never to be heard of again.
Joy Division, Scrat, Korben Dallas, Sassy, Chris P Bacon, Hugh Jardon, Durham, Major Stormee, Kaka, and so many others.
I wonder where they are now and do they ever look in on forum life?

At least it would give witch-hunting Wolfie a more extensive catalogue of targets for his rants. The present one is so boringly predictable.

I've known Wolf for almost eleven years, having met him in early 2008. The people here are all nice and polite. Wolf and I went through the cyber-wars on FF together.
I told ya, Wolf lovz y'all, and is just relaxin' and having fun over here.

The not so great posters who have disappeared I never give a second thought to, a few lovely ones have passed away since I started posting on forums, some are not around because I guess they just found something else to do with their time.
Beamblow, Ty, Melfi, Fluffy, two who used to post on here Maddog and Cass....all really nice posters who dont post anymore....all missed.

I miss DT he was a lovely man and my friend. He passed a couple years ago.
I miss Lola, she seems to have left forums along with Lexi and a few others. I can't remember the bad ones.
I'm glad I've still got Syl, she a lovely poster and my mate x

As the thread title says, friends or foes. One or the other. They are either a debating opponent or agreeing allies.nicko wrote:Andy , why do you say "my mates" ?

Binary choice.
In all my time on Flop , I rarely, if ever saw you disagree with DYK, and his multi named chum Chris Bacon/Bliar/Hugh/Durham.
Kaka and Major became so racist and sick it is little wonder they were outcast as Billy No-mates then finally banned.
I still wonder what those who no longer post do for their kicks?
It is actually quite difficult to completely retire from forum life altogether, as it can become like an addictive drug habit.

To be honest, I don't think many posters, particularly on this site, realised just how much they were being wound up and manipulated into expressing the sort of utterly histrionic and obsessive hatred of anything even mildly on the right of the political spectrum that we see here all the time.
Allla, I believe was truly racist and proud of it. Just think of what we know of his background; that explains a lot.
But much of what he said at least deserved to be taken seriously and debated constructively, whether you agreed with him or not.
(I didn't, for the benefit of the Aussie Obsessive, but (a) that will make no difference and (b) I don't give a shit.)

I didnt know anything about Alla….I never interacted with him if I could help it tbh.
Major I have known since I first joined forums in 2007...he played to the crowd, and he did post some racist stuff....not sure how much of it he believed himself, and how much he said just to wind people up....and like you and Nicko has said, just because we post with someone it doesnt mean we agree with all their views.
Major was a lovely husband, dad and grandad, he was a real family man .I miss that side of him.
Its worrying when a poster who has always been around suddenly stops posting....like I said before, I sincerely hope he is well wherever he is.

As do I, Syl.
I disagreed strongly with much of what was posted by Alla, Major, et al, but I have always been a strong supporter of Voltaire's dictum: "I may disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
This, of course, ran counter to the philosophies of the Nazis and Fascists...so looking at some of the posts in this forum, it is not unreasonable to ask: "Just who are the ultra-Right posters here?"

Perhaps had Andy actually read and attempted to understand all the posts on IAF instead of assuming that everything was exclusively Fascist and/or Nazi, he would not continue to make such a fool of himself.

Voltaire never said that, he said:
“I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write.”
It can be attributed to Evelyn Beatrice Hall
'What a fuss about an omelette!' he had exclaimed when he heard of the burning. How abominably unjust to persecute a man for such an airy trifle as that! "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it," was his attitude now.
Ch. 7 : Helvetius : The Contradiction, p. 199; because of quote marks around the original publication of these words, they are often attributed to Voltaire, though Hall was not actually quoting him but summarizing his attitude with the expression. The statement was widely popularized when misattributed to Voltaire as a "Quotable Quote" in Reader's Digest (June 1934), but in response to the misattribution, Hall had been quoted in Saturday Review (11 May 1935), p. 13, as stating: I did not mean to imply that Voltaire used these words verbatim and should be surprised if they are found in any of his works. They are rather a paraphrase of Voltaire's words in the Essay on Tolerance — "Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too."
https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Evelyn_Beatrice_Hall
Though the point meant within the quote is still valid to live by, of which I stand by also, just correcting the continued error many people make on this. His original actual quote, is basically saying near enough the same mind

The difference being? At least a dozen versions exist, but they all say exactly the same thing, depending who did the actual translation and their perception of French grammar.
I was first acquainted with the attribution to Voltaire that I use as a very young journalist in the 1950s by my news editor, a classicist and double first, Cantab.
I see no reason to disbelieve his version; it is as authentic and as valid as any other.

Sadly some only feel happier, if and when people condemn. This does happen with both people on the left and right mind, so its not just Andy. You are right that you do not need to vocally condemn a poster, if you disagree, if you have already made your views clear on what you stand for and against. That means you still allow yourself to be able to listen to people without a bias, which is a hard thing to do when people often debate. I take it that you more than anything. Simple do not want to get drawn into such silly and often heated debates that spiral out of control and I can hardly blame you for that. As I have often been guilty of pusihing you on certain matters. It means I am still learning and to be frank have learnt loads from you.
I think condemnation should only be used, when something is so abhorant, that personally said towards others on such debates, that are so below the belt. That individual has lost the plot, and the debate. Again I have at times been guilty.
Sadly some people want people to continually defend condemn. Otherwise they then wrongly become suspect in their beliefs. Which is wrong and poor to claim. What it shows is that those thinking this, have not look at all possibilities why people do not get drawn into such debates in the first place. So I can understand where you are coming from.
Nobody should have to continually justify their positions of what they stand for

You may have me on translation, as I am very poor at linguistics, as you welll know. I will certainly bow down to you on that. Not even my ball park, as you well know
My point is, its very similar to what he said, but that she then adpated this
The point is still very much the same, of which I agreed to

4EVER was a lady who made quite an impact on me.
Had a keen sharp mind and great depth to her character.
Researched her stuff very well.
She sometimes took swipes at me but I could see past that.
Had a habit of lashing out at everyone with a blunt weapon, instead of picking her battles more carefully.
She was simply too intense for her own good.

Hell no. He's toxic and was horrible to many members here, particularly women, and really particularly you. I didn't get the slightest impression that he has any regrets about that in the PM we received, so again -- hell no.

Well, if everyone wants him back, let’s put it to a vote.
I’ll happily allow him back if that’s what everyone wants.
