Diabetic mother's family call police after nurses at scandal-hit hospital 'refused to help 59-year-old and left her lying in her soiled bed for three hours'
A family called the police after nurses at a scandal hit hospital refused to help their mother as she lay in her soiled bed for three hours. After weeks of 'dreadful neglect' they say they lost their patience and called 101 the police non emergency line.
Debbie Petinou, 59, had been left to lie in her own urine and faeces on countless occasions, it is alleged, leaving her with the equivalent of third degree burns. And she was forced to remain in a chair on a ward for more than two weeks because the hospital couldn't find her the right sort of bed.
A police report is now with social workers charged with protecting vulnerable adults.
The straw that broke the camel's back came after Mrs Petinou soiled herself and was left for so long she rang one of her daughters. Speaking from her bed at the North Middlesex Hospital, the diabetic mother-of-three, who weighs 22 stone, said: 'I just got to the end of my tether. It wasn't the first time I'd been left for hours like that. It had happened many times before.
'I rang my youngest daughter and she called in and tried to talk to the staff but they kept shouting down at the phone at her and then hung up.
Last week the trust that runs the hospital in Edmonton, North London was failed by a Care Quality Commission inspection for the third time in three years and given a rating of Requires Improvement.
Earlier this year a patient bled to death after being left unattended in the A&E department for hours.

It doesnt matter WHAT her weight is, protracted, on going failure to provide proper health care to a patient in a health care setting SHOULD be a criminal matter with charges brought against both the staff and managers responsible, Withe especial attention being reserved for the administrators.

I don't really believe she sat on a chair in A&E for 14 hours without moving.

Based on what reasoning, when many people already wait many hours in A&E?
It does not matter what you believe, as this is just the tip of the iceberg with such problems

Anyone would get up and move around, they wouldn't just sit there for 14 hours, especially if they're just waiting for a scan. There is another side to this story - as reported in the article.

I know this is not about lifestyle, but why on earth is someone with diabetes allowing themselves to reach 22 stone, and is then having to put up with all the consequences when they could help themselves? It doesn't say what type it is, but I bet it's type 2.

What if they are unable to?
Well do you understand what hyper and hypo is and then tell me how when she was placed in a bed, she could then get up?
So why do you think she was placed into a bed and thus admitted to the hospital?
This is about her lying in her own piss and shit, in a bed, not about sitting

She is diabetic, and you think she was admitted based on waiting times?
Seriously?
Why on earth did she have injections in her eyes then?

Because she has diabetes, possibly because she is very overweight. Why are her family blaming the state of her legs on the hospital?

It just makes no sense. The family didn't like the way she was treated in hospital, but then said that she was released too soon. I know that hospital staff do sometimes need to be "nagged" a bit, but I'm not sure I believe that it was so extreme.
How come this story is only in the tabloids?

You have not read the story properly
She should have never been in A&E
She was due to have these injections, but also later had severe swollen legs, which later had blisters bursts on these legs
So because of undue swelling of the eyes, they told her she needed a scan and she was wrongly sent to A&E. Her legs then became swollen and its very probable due to the 14 hours she was made to wait in A&E on a chair
The claim is she was kept in a chair for two weeks and its very possible this is what has happened based on bed shortages
That is appalling
She was never even meant to be in A&E

I have read it. She was an outpatient, but ended up in A&E waiting for a scan, allegedly didn't move for 14 hours, which caused her legs to swell. Why would anyone sit in a chair for that long if they knew it was bad for their legs?

Why does she need to be in A&E as an outpatient waiting for a scan
As out patients come for scans all the time?
The penny has not dropped yet has it?

Why don't people look after themselves better anyway? If it's type 2, it would have helped her to lose a lot of weight, but she clearly didn't. I don't get it. No wonder her legs swell up.

Outpatients come for scans all the time and she should have never been sent to A&E
To say she should have known this, is ridiculous
She just went where she was told to go
She should have remained in the out patient section andf why do I know?
Because unlike you, I have worked in the NHS
All of which does not matter, she should have never been left in her own piss and shit

I want to help people overweight, yet you led with this
So why did you lead with her weight

The number of obese people in this country is reaching absurd levels. I don't mean people who are a bit podgy, that could happen to any of us, but it's full of people barely able to walk because they're so huge.

Claiming what if's has no bearing, as its based on your perceived view and not that person
You cannot expect them to think as you do, hence a ridiculous argument

Change this? It's best to change it before one hits 22 stone.
So your view is to discriminate based on weight and size?
How about smoking or drinking?
How about sugar intake?
Is that your philosophy to help people?

I mean you are the first to cry wolf when you claim I judge you
Go figure
Well encouraging them to lose weight doesn't seem to be working does it? The problem is getting worse and worse.
Before they have a scan?
You are saying its justified to have her be lying in her own piss and shit, based on her weight?
The problem here is you discriminate, prejudice and do nothing to help combat obseity

What does help to combat obesity then? Nobody else can do that for someone else - the solution is in their own hands.

Where is the allegedly in that Rags?
