I can see the problem with some kids today, certainly teenagers who aren't used to it.

But with very young kids and pre-schoolers, if they only ever knew unisex bathrooms then they would not see it as strange or get rowdy, it would just become normal to them. Which would likely have the affect of stopping boys being all excitable at the prospect since it would just be ordinary rather than break some societal taboo.

I honestly don't care much either way if we have unisex toilets or not; I see the good and bad sides but long term I think the overall benefit would probably outweigh the problems.

There are already people with mental health problems entering toilets of their own gender forever, and again if this starts with children then in 2 generations time this will not be a problem. The problem is, as veya suggests, that the idea of shared toilets arouses such hormonal feelings among people not used to it that it just seems so 'wrong'.

Your point on siblings fails to matter since no one generally feels rowdy about their brothers and sisters anyway...

Although, imagine the effect it might have on children with opposite gender siblings if they were constantly made to feel as if sharing a bath or bathroom as kids was an absolute taboo - just speculation but I doubt the impact would be positive.

I'm not saying people have to hold it in. People do choose to mostly because public toilets are often very unhygienic.

My view is that if people were brought up using the same toilets without a fuss, this would very probably have the ultimate effect of making boys and girls less awkward/uncomfortable around each other and might even lead to less issues with abuse since they would not see 'breaking boundaries' as such a monstrous taboo.

We cannot KNOW either way what the long term effect would be.
