Police should dramatically increase the use of stop and search to combat spiralling gang violence, former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith demands today. A ‘toxic cycle of serious violence’ fuelled by drug dealers who operate ‘with impunity’ is spreading around the country, a major report by the Conservative MP’s think-tank warns.

The 148-page blueprint – which will heap pressure on London Mayor Sadiq Khan just days after the number of killings in the capital this year reached 100 – calls for a US-style crackdown on gang leaders. In what will be seen as a criticism of Theresa May, the report accuses senior officers of all but abandoning ‘active policing’ – including stop and search – because they fear being accused of institutional racism.

This is a familiar tactic. First, a conservative government cuts government jobs because they're a drain on the taxpayer or whatever.

In this case, about 20,000 cops are cut. Crime goes up.

Then, conservative government proposes curtailing rights and pushing the country toward a police state to bring crime back down.

Thankfully, it's never worked for very long, because the public gets fed up with stories of cops harassing innocent citizens.

whats the point of having police for burglary car theft etc......when the PC crippled, lefty leaning, no punishment courts wont lock em up/flog em/whatever?

the reality is there is NO deterrent, little consequence and certainly no retribution for even the worst of anti social crimes.....even murder is only a few easy years...unless its particularly nasty or targets one of the lefts "protected"

We even had the most senior copper saying a few weeks back that the publici will HAVE to.....note... HAVE to...... accept different policing priorities, indicating the intent to abdicate any responsibility to the whole idea of "policing by consent" that is to say the contract by which we accept police here...we give up weapons and seeing to our own security in return YOU (the police and govt") agree to protect us.

IF the police are so highly stretched they cant manage to run the show properly, I suggest they are relieved of anti terror duties , being replaced by military specialists.

The 'hard' sentencing costs money, and when the rightys are handed the bill they start whinging and crying and saying they won't pay.

Just as with war...rightys have the most expensive tastes, but they are cheapskates when it comes to paying for it. Those prisons and courts cost money. Pony up, then talk right or wrong.

The PC is in the laws that over-charge, and over-sentence, and over-zealous tactics in enforcement.  Just a bunch of self-righteous ninnies clucking at jay-walkers.

It's too soft, and it's too soft because of whinging lefty's refusing to believe that the "big Stick" is some how agains't their Human rights !
