Female Home Office employees are refusing to use new £36,000 gender-neutral toilets because they feel 'distressed' by their male colleagues leaving the cubicle doors open

Women have been avoiding new £36,000 gender-neutral lavatories at the Home Office because men are leaving their cubicle doors open while they’re inside.

A notice has been placed outside the unisex toilets at the department’s Westminster headquarters asking men to ensure they only use them with the doors shut because their behaviour was keeping female colleagues away.

‘Women are finding use of the toilets quite distressing and are not using these toilets as a result,’ it continues.

I would have thought it was simple manners to shut the cubicle door, women do, why cant men?

Unisex toilets dont bother me, they are in a few places we go to and I have no qualms about using them, but as in all things, just use a bit of common sense.

I suppose in traditional (British ) male facilities they are just used to standing there without cubicles, maybe it takes a bit of getting used to being enclosed in a cubicle. It depends on the level of privacy you are used to, I know some women who don't shut the door and keep talking to anyone washing their hands or doing their hair.

I bet a lot of us have done that in our younger days when out clubbing....I have, but obviously it was a female only environment. In the workplace it's different, and if it's a mixed loo, if you dont respect your own privacy you should at least consider others.

On the flip side I have known of a couple of men who cant even wee at a urinal unless there are no other men present.

Don't care if you're a man or woman, you shut the door.

In Australia, NZ and parts of the USA the word "gimp" is often used to describe a crippled or disabled person  --  as in some people saying that somebody walking with a limp is "walking with a 'gimpy' leg",  and hence calling a person with a limp a "gimp" or "gimpy" can be used as a nasty slur towards that person and/or his/her disability, (it isn't used in a friendly manner -- as it isn't a friendly-sounding word, and could be taken as being a slur against many disabilities..).

I would like to hear about the etymological connection to a woman of the Roman cloth.  For my money, the only ones worth anything in that religion are the nuns (the priests are in that back room diddling little boys).  I hesitate to associate anything about them with a derogatory term about the disabled.

It can also mean a fishing line manufactured from silk thread, but other than that, old boy, I haven't a clue.

I had some good discussions with him, though our politics were poles apart. It turned out he came from a village only three miles from where I was born and brought up.
