Girls are skipping school to avoid sharing gender neutral toilets with boys after being left to feel unsafe and ashamed
Gender-neutral toilets in schools have left girls feeling unsafe and even put their health at risk, parents and teachers have warned.
Girls who are menstruating are so anxious about sharing facilities with boys that some are staying at home for fear of being made to feel 'period shame'.
With a growing number of both primary and secondary schools installing unisex toilets, some girls are risking infections by refusing to urinate all day.
Others are so fearful they have stopped drinking liquids at school.
The trend for single-sex toilets is driven by the wish to be more inclusive of children who identify as transgender and wish to use the same facilities as the opposite sex.
But last night, doctors and politicians called on schools to halt the move towards unisex toilets to prevent any further harm to female pupils.
GP Tessa Katz said holding in urine for prolonged periods on a regular basis could increase the risk of girls suffering urinary and bladder infections.

So dumb school policies are medically harming young girls. All in order to make a minor few trans people happy. I mean seriously WTF?

Re: Girls are skipping school to avoid sharing gender neutral toilets with boys after being left to feel unsafe and ashamed
There is nothing wrong within itself in adding 'unisex' toilets into the mix, if the main aim is to accommodate a more "inclusive" policy...
What the real problem here is, is that those morons introducing such a policy should not have removed the choice of 'male' and 'female' toilets and washrooms at the same time -- if their school councils/communities genuinely wanted to be "more inclusive", they should be providing all three alternatives, along with disabled facilities being added as well -- not in effect shutting out the majority to pander to a minority..
The usual suspects on here will try to make this a "lefty/liberal/Marxist" problem, but the simple truth is that 'overly p/c' morons don't have to have any political bias or motives -- they simply have to be brainless and unthinking morons, not thinking about possible consequences, more interested in merely being seen to do something "more politically correct".

Girls have always taken time off at this time. This is just another excused.
As I understand it, the first days of one's period can be rough for some. The remedy is to just admit it, and allow this to be a legitimate excuse to be absent from school.

So, why not respect women's right to declare time off when it's that time?

The argument if the OP article is that women during their menstrual periods avoid school to avoid menstrual embarrassment.

Seems, according to the OP article, the main fear of women is the so-called ‘period shame’. This isn’t an argument against unisex bathrooms. This is an argument against forcing women to be embarrassed anytime, anywhere. The answer is to be more liberal with absenteeism during women’s menstrual periods.
Women should be granted leave to be absent during this time, anyway. The menstrual period is usually associated with being bloated, and abdominal pain, coupled with cramps. Why force a woman to go through any discomfort, shame or pain? Why not give them a day or two off?

Why not just keep things as they have been for generations... whereby we have separate male/female toilet facilities...!!!???
There is no majority support for any of this PC inspired change to enforced "unisex" toilet facilities...
In fact... the overwhelming vast majority are against this!!!

Re: Girls are skipping school to avoid sharing gender neutral toilets with boys after being left to feel unsafe and ashamed
We should keep what we are all used to and give people male and female facilities with disabled adaptions plus the added choice of unisex facility for those who wish to use it. No one should be forced to adapt to such a pc idea like this.
We should be inclusive but I doubt, the way things are going, that we will be able to accommodate all nuances.

Why? I think it just conflates two entirely separate issues. Free the women first, by accommodating their physiological, quite natural hardships. Then argue the controversy on unisex bathrooms on it's merits.
I think you are just using women's issues as a cumulative manipulation, to win your argument over unisex bathrooms.

I agree. What is wrong with having all the alternatives?
The issue shows that opponents are simply anti-LGBT. They don't want to be so inclusive, but rather exclude LGBT's as they think they are somehow immoral.
Laws aren't about immorality, but finding workable solutions for public safety and happiness. Vintage, I think you hit the nail on the head.

What I think is great is that we can get all freaked out about issues like this, while we're dooming the planet to catastrophes with global warming.
It's like that scene in that one Pirates of the Caribbean movie where they're having sword fights while the ship is sinking. It's exactly like that, actually.

Worst whataboutism going
People can still think about helping combat climate change whilst ensuring the rights of women can they not?
So based on your reasoning we should not then worry about homosexuals being hanged in Islamic countries, as after all climate change matters more to you?

Most males are happy to have a bank of urinals for a quick stand up piss...
Why do these so called 'inclisive' unisex toilets 'exclude' the option for the vast majority of males to have urinals whereby they can nip in for a quick stand up piss...!?

Quill - the cause of "period shaming" isn't girls' "physiological, quite natural hardships". It's sexist bullying. What do you propose to stop boys bullying and intimidating girls in bathrooms?

First, allow the young women to avoid the bullying by taking those days off. This wisdom is coupled with the purpose of avoiding the physical pains that the young women endure at this time. They require a period of rest. Schooling doesn't include making victims of the women...psychological or physical.
Second, I champion whatever programs, educational or institutional, that prevent or stop bullying. I admit I am not an expert on 'bullying prevention'--in my day we just punched the guy out--but those who are experts have provided some excellent suggestions. I recommend we follow their direction.

Re: Girls are skipping school to avoid sharing gender neutral toilets with boys after being left to feel unsafe and ashamed
I expect most girls wouldn't want to get a day or two behind at school every month. There's nothing in the OP to suggest the bullying is confined just to those days at any rate.
I can't fault Wolf's solution - introduce Unisex toilets, but retain the Single Sex ones as well.

Absolutely. As a former champion of the "who-can-piss-highest-up-the-bog-wall?" contest at a certain RAF base in the Home Counties many moons ago, my one and only achievement of physical excellence would have been denied to me.
It would also have been to the financial detriment of the landlord of the local pub at which I imbibed copious amounts of Olde Gruntfuttock's XXXX in preparation for my successful attempt at the title.

They can have that choice, if they want it. The solution is in not prohibiting anything.

It was in the OP: it was called "period shaming". I don't know...I agree it sounds a bit far fetched. That's what I meant when I suggested it was, at best, a "cumulative", or what lawyers call a make weight argument.
@Lex wrote:I can't fault Wolf's solution - introduce Unisex toilets, but retain the Single Sex ones as well.
Both Wolf and Vintage have struck on that solution. I, too, agree with them.
