Londoner goes off-grid by ditching his £400,000 mortgage and 'unfulfilling' city life to build a £4,000 'hobbit' eco-home in Welsh woodland made from materials he bought on eBay
A Londoner who swapped daily Tubes for life among the trees has said he has 'never been happier' after he fled the city for a slice of the wilderness in Wales.
Kris Harbour had what many people dream of - a busy social life, a good job and both a flat and a house in the capital, but the 31-year-old lift engineer was always looking for more.
Like many others, he left school at 16 and went straight work, living to pay his bills.
Until one day he found what he really wanted on e-Bay.
An 18.5 acre plot of land in South Wales was the answer to Mr Harbour's prayers. Life in London was unfulfilling and he found himself wondering whether he could turn a wooded plot into his dream home.
Mr Harbour quit his job, sold his properties and set off for Wales.

Kris Harbour left school at 16 and went to work in a boat yard but he was unhappy with the way life was going - until he found a plot of land on eBay
Kris Harbour, 31, is hoping to give back to the land and create a haven for himself among the wildlife in the Welsh countryside

The Daily Mail's headline there is pure rubbish...
The "£4,000" that they claim only covers the material costs for his little cabin..
It doesn't cover the initial cost of his 18.5 acre block !
Nor his local council fees and permits, septic system/waste control (assuming that he isn't, illegally and unhygienically, simply "shitting in the woods"..), or his solar power supply -- meaning that the total cost of turning his dream forest cottage into a proper 'home' would have cost much, much more in reality..
Nor does it put a monetary value on his "1000 hours" of labour.
(Also, the DM calling his 18.5 acre woodlot a "wilderness" is also more rubbish -- let their reporter come to some 'New World' country if they want to find genuine untouched virgin "wilderness"..).

It certainly makes a change from a large house that takes over the landscape which seems to get built around here. It will have a small carbon footprint as well, how much room does a person need in a house after all. I think its great.

because an 'off grid' home includes lots of things like water tanks, solar panels and Batteries etc
As I live semi Off Grid, (I collect, store and pump all my own water.)
I can tell you for fact that to do this sensibly you need at least 20,000L of water storage (2 10,000L tanks, so all your 'eggs are not in the same basket')
https://www.directwatertanks.co.uk/
they are 1000 pounds each so half cost is gone JUST in water stores
Going off grid is no where near as cheap as some daydreaming articles pretend it is.

Whether the plans succeed depends on the person's personality and stamina. The cold harsh reality does not always match the dream.
What about social isolation?
What about commuting - and easy access to local schools if he has kids?
Will he miss creature comforts? Having always had water, electricity, gas, satellite TV, broadband - everything instantly vailable at the flick of a switch/tap - without giving it a second thought, he now has to rough it, and do battle with the elements to get his daily energy supply!!
Nice dream, gets an uptick from me for seeking a green lifestyle, I wish him well.

Where the fuck are the claimed "sour grapes" in my post..
All I did, was to point how misleading that DM reporter's dramatic yet idiotic headline is.
The headline claims that he built his "hobbit eco-home" for £4,000 -- but then the article reveals that only covers the purchase cost for materials !!!
After adding on all the subsequent costs to turn that into a genuine "eco-home" -- land, access and clearing, council permits and permissions, foundations/footings/floor, actual building costs, home builder's insurance (and homeowners insurance one completed ?), water supply, solar power supply, waste disposal/septic, etc. -- all of a sudden your DM reporter's headline "£4,000" spend becomes more like a £200,000 cost to make it a genuine "home".

Total bullshit, you ignorant dolt -- the newspaper's headline claims a "£4,000" eco-home -- nowhere does it mention "house materials only" in the headline -- the reporter's misleading exaggerations are only revealed in the body of the story..

the head line doesn't say house, it says HOME
a home is more than the a few materials made into walls.
this isn't even taking into account it ignores labour cost and Everything required for services

Splitting hairs on a word
So a home without a garden, is not a house to you?
What labour costs, when he did the work himself?
The cost is clearly reffering to what he spend on his home. IE house.
Why is it everyone else here looks at this as a nice story and the Ultra left get their knickers in a twist over a headline?

Yep, too true, that...
Poor old diddery Dodge -- sometimes you have to wonder if English is even his first language..
That DM headline clearly but wrongly states that the homeowner "built" his "eco-home" for £4,000 after buying materials on eBay -- a patently ridiculous statement.
At no stage have I criticised the home builder -- yet in his infinite wisdom, Dodger tries to claim that my comment on the DM reporter's idiotic lies is somehow demonstrating some imagined "sour grapes", suggesting that I am somehow jealous of that wonky DM hack !?!
Shades of some of the Dodger's recent idiotic personal attacks against you aand Quill..

Small acreages within an hour or so from here would be just as expensive, or even dearer...
Average building blocks (say, between 600 and 800 square metres..) in nearby suburbs of Lake Macquarie, and neighbouring council areas are currently selling for the equivalent of £150,000 to £250,000 -- and this is for a two hour drive north of Sydney !!!
However, I do know that there are some acreages still available up and down the coast, where you could still find twice the land for half the price.. (One example -- I found a 40 acre (16 hectare) block advertised a few hours drive up on the North Coast -- half-cleared, half tree covered, good rainfall, mild winters, a couple of miles outside a local village, 1 to 2 hours drive to the closest major towns -- for the equivalent of less than £70,000..).

a house without a toilet is not a viable home Because just the infrastructure for a working flush toilet is thousands of pounds.
buy the time you include water storage to flush and a septic tank for it go to you're already spent more than 2000 pounds, doing it poorly. it probably cost 5000 pounds to do it properly.

The more nonsense that diddery ol' Dodge spouts on this topic, the more ignorant a buffoon he proves to be...
He doesn't understand the difference between a pile of house-building materials and a finished "home"...
He clearly hasn't grasped the basic concepts of "eco-homes" or "off grid living"..
The more that the Dodger twists and turns in trying to prove veya or myself somehow wrong, and the more he defends the Daily Fail's patehetically misleading article, the bigger the dolt he proves himself to be.

in such a situation a simple composting toilet would be all thats needed for even a family of 2 adults and 2 children.....they work well, are NOT smelly (if made and used correctly) and are a safe and convenient way of disposing of human waste..we have one at our woodland retreat, and even in the current heat wave there is no objectionable smell, indeed the only smaell is the sawdust we use as the co-composting material (you do a dump and cover it with a layer of sawdust....) pee is seperated by an inbuilt urine seperator....

It’s a great idea, a great cabin and a great lifestyle.
I completely agree Eddie on all points

in such a situation a simple composting toilet would be all thats needed for even a family of 2 adults and 2 children.....they work well, are NOT smelly (if made and used correctly) and are a safe and convenient way of disposing of human waste..we have one at our woodland retreat, and even in the current heat wave there is no objectionable smell, indeed the only smaell is the sawdust we use as the co-composting material (you do a dump and cover it with a layer of sawdust....) pee is seperated by an inbuilt urine seperator....
go google composting toilet....
Spot on and a shower to boot
That little tractor with the front scoop alone, on the right side of the first photo there, would blow your "£4,000" budget right out of the water...
Then there's the cost of sourcing and milling the timber for that 'post and beam' construction, and hiring a knowledgeable worker to help in the actual building (even if it was a bottle of scotch and a barbecue to bribe someone like Lord Foul into helping someone like the Dodger, that's still part of the building cost..).

Oh my god, he has plenty of timber around him, where again you are speculating, as he lives in surrounding woods
Doh
How is to say a friend has not helped him with their tractor, or he has simply hired this for a day or two? Which is about £100 per day
You see you constantly talk crap and never think anything through
And again this is something additional and not what the actual house cost
Doh

I'm not sure about the lifestyle. It's probably exciting when you build a cabin, but what do you do afterwards?
I agree that it's silly to argue about the money. The point is that the guy chose a completely different course and gave up his conventional lifestyle to build himself another (very small) house.

That timber didge, didnt come from his wood, or at least if it did it would be no cheaper than buying it in
That has been processed and from the colour has been pressure treated....
to cur an mill.that timber to those sizes requires either a band mill .(about 3,000 second hand) or an oregon chainsaw mill (abouut 1,000 +a small fortune in chaisaw blades......they dont like rip sawing) .
Then he would have to transport it to somwhere that pressure treats it and back.
IF he had the skills (unlikely these days) he could perhaps, split the timbers as I doo when I want sections from my fellings. But accurately splitting timber to make those useable sections is not something many folks can do

I'm not the one digging the hole, nicko -- Dodge is...
Veya and Victor have both made posts above that effectively confirm my position here..
Dodge is full of shit -- I never criticised the homeowner, but the Daily Flail and its braindead reporter.
The headlines for both the DM and this thread are clearly wrong..
Your snide remark should have been aimed at doddery ol' Didge...

Nothing "snide" about it, you were losing the argument and didn't like it " your not the expert on living off the land and were just nit-picking thinking you know all about it !

Wrong on both counts, nicko...
I wasn't losing anything -- as clearly shown by Dodge's twists and turns..
I suggest you read both veya's and Victor's comments on Didge's reasoning.
And secondly -- I know much more about both rural and wilderness living than what you're prepared to give credit for -- nor have I ever claimed to be an "expert" on either..
The DM headline is still wrong, no matter how much you want to support Didge's stubborn bluster..
Even you must realise that a £4,000 pile of building materials doesn't equal a "home" ???

I can keep Didge groaning along for a couple of pages, as he keeps on digging himself in deeper and deeper, on this here thread...
Or if you prefer it that he keeps on calling anyone on here who doesn't agree with any of his edicts in the slightest, "anti-semites" and "Marxist" and "racists" and "illiberal regressives"..

Okay no problem, but the fact is, its an additional part of the house
The cost again specified, was about the cost of the house
Hence Wolf was like I say, scraping the barrel here
I have no idea why he has such a beef about this or the mail, when they are reporting basically a nice story

You lost the plot on that, because it was not about this additional asset to the house
As I posted this, not the Mail, to what else he is doing
So the cost of the outhouse would be extra
If you want to continue on being silly here, be my guest
I am always going to respect the views of Lord Foul over you.
That is a cue to learn from him

Lord Foul wrote:veya_victaous wrote:Didge wrote:veya_victaous wrote:the head line doesn't say house, it says HOME
a home is more than the a few materials made into walls.
this isn't even taking into account it ignores labour cost and Everything required for services
Go figure
a house without a toilet is not a viable home Because just the infrastructure for a working flush toilet is thousands of pounds.
buy the time you include water storage to flush and a septic tank for it go to you're already spent more than 2000 pounds, doing it poorly. it probably cost 5000 pounds to do it properly.
As someone in the process of 'going off grid' It's no where near as cheap as the dreamers like to suggest, I'm looking at battery systems and for something reliable to meet 100% of needs your looking at 3000 minimum, and I already have the Solar panels
has he fitted a flush toilet?

go google composting toilet....
Do you really want to use it everyday though? including cold winters nights
technically he could just shit in the woods and live in a tent, but to have something you can say has 'comparable amenities to a suburban home'.
like running water, hot water, indoor toilet and shower... plus reasonable reliable electricity.
It cost more than 4k.
