Couple trying to evict their own tenant are forced to give him cheap rent for LIFE in the £310,000 home after his lawyer uses a little-known 1925 law
[*]David and Sheila Harding were trying to evict tenant Colin Gregory
[*]But a little known law forced them to give him cheap rent for life in East Sussex
[*]A law dating back 92 years and a case from 1948 were used in the case
A couple who wanted to turf out their tenant were instead forced to give him cheap rent for life because of little known laws dating back 92 years. David and Sheila Harding bought their friend and next door neighbour Colin Gregory's three-bedroom home nearly 20 years ago. Mr Gregory was struggling with the mortgage, and Mr Harding rented the home back to the former antiques dealer for £800 a month. But decades later, when the couple wanted to sell up to fund their new life in Spain, he refused to leave.

I have never heard of a 'Buy to rent' mortgage.....maybe they should have got a normal mortgage and rented the house to the previous owner on a separate agreement.
Some of these old laws need looking at and scrapping...Hackney cab drivers were still legally obliged to carry a bale of hay in their cabs till the mid 70's.
Laws that still exist today.... flying a Kite, shaking your doormat out in the street, getingt drunk when in charge of a cow...just a few things that are still illegal in the UK.

Certain times? Annually or hourly? If hourly, at certain times a day, we should try it.
That is so cool.

It's strange that Mr Gregory couldn't afford the mortgage, but he could afford £800 a month in rent.

Isn't it tied up with the honour of Freemanship or City Guilds?
Mind you, there are some old laws and regulations that have never been repealed or changed for centuries. Someone once told me that a man of York is entitled to shoot a Scotsman with a bow and arrow so long as it's from the city wall - and not on a Sunday.
I think there's a similar entitlement for men of Hereford, but only in respect of Welshmen.

Well, York was always within easy marching distance for Scottish armies when things got boring. You can see the nervous Yorkies at the ramparts, knocking knees while waiting.

As recently as the 1990s, an Englishman was legally entitled to smack his wife once a day (and twice on Sundays..) to keep her in line, if he thought she was getting out of control...
I wonder if they have removed that centuries-old law yet ?
