[*]Teacher managed to turn English department around despite health difficulties
[*]But he was sacked after showing a class of 15-year-olds an 18-rated horror film
[*]He sued the council, saying he was put under too much pressure at the time

The people who should have been sacked, by rights, are :
* Whatever fools rated the movie so restrictively/for 18+ mature audiences, when it can be seen on TV and online -- with no such bullshit classifications; and
* Whatever morons at the school sacked a teacher simply for showing a relatively-mild, and not that scary either, "horror" movie...

I reckon that school got off pretty lightly, considering the utter stupidity of their actions..

£600.000 for what? That's an incredible amount of money.

Damages in wrongful termination cases usually amount to back pay and benefits, plus any damage to reputation, for a period of 5 - 8 years. That is, unless good fortune gives the guy a bright opportunity.
