I have a pretty strange sense of humor too And I sort of groaned while I smiled at that picture. I think a picture of the Prince chasing a child is funny, while others wouldn't find that funny at all. But that picture stirs a lot of emotion. It's not a picture of emaciated and gassed Jews in a concentration camp, but it's getting close.

Nope. I don’t know the history and I don’t care to know because it was a joke. If the picture had been posted as the start of a story about what was behind the picture I’d be happy to discuss it....but, it was a joke.

For fuck's sake, this is so basic that I feel stupid and a bit soiled even saying this, but I'll do it anyway, because this sort of shit really pisses me off:

* The joke is not that abusing children is funny.

* The fact that eddie posted this JOKE doesn't mean she supports paedophilia, or thinks it's funny.

* If you find jokes offensive, you don't know what a joke is.

Could be funny, only Andrew although an abysmal person isn't paedo as far as we are aware, he apparently likes young [u]girls[u], not boys, not under the age of consent, then again who wouldn't when given the 'come on' by a young nubile girl, who doesn't appear to have been coerced as far as you know and would you even think of that? The man is a sleaze bag but so are so many more in this kind of situation. This is a man who from his teens was pursued by girls and women of all ages, he would not have had to pay or force a hell of a lot of women in his day, so if he feels entitled to the young and vivacious he is surely not alone, there are many actors, pop stars and sports personalities in very much the same situation - how many pass this opportunity up or think about the girl's motivation.

If you dont know the history, then you wont see it like many of us who are older.

That's the problem with some of these things. Different generations will have different reactions to the same photo based on historical context.

It's why me and Nicko reacted differently than some others. We know that picture well and it was horrific what happened to that little girl.

She is still alive in Canada and her life history is pretty amazing. This is why I asked if you knew the back story. Not to humiliate you but to inform you about it. If you're still cool with it, that's fine too. I just wanted you to know.

This is why I said that a picture of Charles chasing a child for Andrew was acceptable.

Just not this one.

We have all posted, said or done things without being fully aware. It's not a crime. We learn and move on.

Or is it offensive to repurpose the original photo to make a different point?

Is it worse to attack children with napalm or to take advantage of them sexually?

I knew it, and tbh, I am surprised, given the fame of that photo, and the follow ups to where those people are now, I'm surprised you didn't.

I accept you didn't though, what will irk me is the probable way you will....now you know why some people dont find it funny, but you will defend your humour and even castigate others for not sharing it.

the person you should aim your opprobrium at is the originator of that meme (since he/she MUST have manipulated the original picture, and thus have been aware of its content. Eddie, being a mere sprout is unlikely to have known that original picture (our wonderful education system dont ya know) and would thus be unaware as us "oldies" are that it stands as a testament to mans inhumanity to man, up there with pictures from auschwitz, pol pots cambodia and Idi Amins uganda......to name a few.

I didnt find it in the least amusing either TBH, (and I'm not one to have a "clenched butt" about things)

The other side of this however is also of concern, since it either trivialises something rather grubby OR impunes someone without good reason....

If prince Andrew was involved with this female and she was "of legal age" and happy to indulge, then regardless of your opinion, it was legal (and by extension of law into morality also moral..... Given that the law is always moral..... isnt it?) If she wasnt then it trivialises underage sex.... neither of the above are remotely funny in my opinion.

But thats humour for you..... my most hated comedien...Roy Chubby Brown.....about as funny as a hedgehog in a condom factory, and about as welcome

I don't think it trivializes anything. It makes a clear statement: if it’s wrong to do harm to children, as with Kim in Vietnam, it’s equally wrong to sleep with an underaged girl, as Prince Andrew does.

The problem is with those who don’t like the political comparison. They are not the least bit interested in the child, in either case.

Oh, there is wry humor in it. I think it’s more to do with politics and hypocrisy, but the Brits at least can catch that sense of droll wit.

I know the thread mentions “jokes” and “pictures” in the title, but most entries appear to be memes and pictures dealing with ironic situations. Certainly, irony and hypocrisy have been the subject of particularly wry humor. And there's more than a little irony in high-flying Andy getting his ass pinched in a sex scandal.

The meme has no meaning if it doesn't relate to the message of the original photograph. The more general meaning is: children are innocent, yet by their innocence they always pay the price. As it was with war, so it with Andrew's lascivious relations with children.

Eddie thought it had meaning with out the context of war. She just saw the Prince chasing a child, which is funny in a cringe-worthy kind of way. She didn't know who the children were in the photo, and I'm still betting the creator of the meme didn't either.
