Candidate Votes PCT
Conor Lamb (D) 113,813 49.8%
Rick Saccone (R) 113,186 49.6%

The special election in southwestern Pennsylvania remained too close to call into the late hours of March 13. While Lamb took an early lead, the race tightened as returns from rural areas arrived late into the evening. The winner will fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Rep. Tim Murphy (R), who resigned amid a scandal.

Whether Lamb or Saccone wins, he will only hold the seat for the rest of this year until midterm elections select lawmakers in newly drawn House districts. Libertarian Drew Miller also is running. The existing 18th Congressional District includes populous areas south of Pittsburgh and more rural counties in the state's southwest corner.

Pennsylvania vote shows that Trumpism has its limits — even in Trump country
Winners and losers from the Pennsylvania special election.

The district won’t exist in its current form come November, thanks to a redrawn map recently ordered by the state Supreme Court. Here's how the new map changes the playing field in Pennsylvania. The new maps shift borders, creating an additional district where Clinton won big and leaving one fewer district safely GOP.

The election was too close to call late Tuesday, constituting another big swing toward Democrats in a congressional special election. The elections for governors in 2017 also saw leftward shifts compared with the 2016 presidential margin in their states.

Big changes in Congress coming. Perhaps impeachment? cheers
