Winston Churchill-inspired 'Blighty cafe' is stormed by a group of Left-wing protesters who brand Britain's wartime leader a 'racist'
First topic message reminder :
A Winston Churchill-inspired cafe that has become a target for activists has been stormed by a group of Left-wing protesters. Nine demonstrators burst into the Blighty UK Cafe in North London on Saturday and told customers to boycott the place for ‘celebrating colonialism’. They also denounced Britain’s wartime leader as a ‘racist’ The patriotic cafe, in Finsbury Park, features a life-size Churchill figure, Union Flags and model Spitfires. But a small group of young men and women stormed the diner and disrupted staff and customers.
One of the protesters says: ‘We cannot accept the unashamed colonial and gentrifying presence of this cafe. You will never make colonialism palatable.’ She demands the owners ‘apologise to the local community for their poorly thought out and insensitive branding and promptly change it’. The whole group also chants ‘It is our duty to fight for our freedom’ and ‘we have nothing to lose but our chains’.
When one diner says ‘Churchill fought for our freedom’, a protestor replies ‘Churchill was a racist’. The incident is the latest in a string of attacks on the cafe.
Last week it emerged that owners were facing calls to ‘adjust their brand’ from locals who had taken offence to the décor. Protesters even started an online petition which claims the cafe, and its sister branch, are ‘using history in a light-hearted fancy dress manner’. Owner Chris Evans has also been forced to remove a Churchill mural after it was repeatedly vandalised with the words ‘scum’, ‘warmonger’ and ‘imperialist’.
He told The Sun: ‘For me they are wrong to say we can’t celebrate Britain’s history, we have done some bad things in the past, I agree, but it doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the Commonwealth which, for me, is a positive thing.' In a previous interview he defended his cafes' themes and said that the vandalism of the Churchill mural and petition against his flourishing chain had been an 'unnecessary headache'.
He said: 'We never imagined that Churchill or Gandhi would attract complaints. We thought they were both widely-liked and admired figures. 'After all, Darkest Hour cinema audiences are currently giving standing ovations to Churchill's "We shall fight on the beaches" speech. 'The Churchill mural was just a bit of fun with the idea that he had two fingers up ordering a double espresso. 'But, sadly, we had to get rid of it some months back after it was repeatedly vandalised. We now have people running petitions against us.
'It is simply silly to say we are celebrating British imperialism and colonialism.
'We are just an independent cafe chain put together by people who work hard to make it happen and yet people seem to want to bring politics into it to try and drag us down.
'All we are doing is celebrating a true British hero in Churchill and the ties between Britain and Commonwealth countries through the mediums of coffee and food.'

Taken offence?
Left wing retards, throwing their dummies out again.
The owner should invest in some rottweilers and let them loose on the protestors, if they are on his property.
Its odd that such idiots, have never protested at Madame Tussauds

You are the idiot didge...
I get tired of repeating myself to you, as you never listen!
Because you are too thick to understand what is being said!
Your loaded questions are spurious!
And besides that, for every one of your 'questions' I do answer... you ignore the answer, and then ask two more... ending up with an ever increasing list of spurious questions, along with your additional regular waffle of how I've failed to answer anything...!
And quite frankly... I can't be bothered with all your bullshit today!
Either read the articles I posted... and try thinking about what is being said in them........ or don't...!
Your spurious waffle doesn't negate anything that is said in them...!

You avoided my questions Tommy
I have posted countless links to you and everytime you ignore them
You post the views of apologists. Germanic ones at that, which is ironic
What you need to tell me is why Hitler purged all the socialist and left wing elements in the Nazi party and opposition, but did not with all Conservative groups?
Why he also classed Communism, a marxist socialist doctrine, as a main enemy?
Why did he not class any right wing organisation in another country as a main enemy?
Why all his allies were right wing authoritarian?

Hitler was a statist, like any communist. However, statists can come from either side of the political spectrum, as long as you are using the left-right spectrum. Hitler was on the far right (like Pinochet or Franco). Lenin was on the far left.
I don't understand why this is so difficult to understand.

Simmer down dude. I was just pointing out why many on the right consider Hitler to be on the left. They don't understand that statism includes fascism and communism.

Most people don't really understand.
There are several different examples of political spectrums in use today. Most people in the U.S. measure the political parties and philosophies across a horizontal line, from liberal to conservative. Others see the political spectrum as a square with totalitarianism in the top corner and freedom in the opposing corner. We tend to disagree with most political spectrums because they misunderstand the eternal struggle of freedom versus tyranny and mistakenly believe that either the right or left side is closer to freedom, or that one is better than the other. This tyranny manifests itself as non-voluntary communism, statism, fascism, imperialism, and any other form of authoritarianism. The opposite of all these power schemes is Anarchism.

Hitler was statist from the right of center.
Stalin was a statist from the left of center.
They both were statist that were gigantic dicks.

Adam Young is studying computer science in Ontario, Canada (adam_young@hotmail.com).
This is the author of one of Tommy's articles. I'm sure he is a good student, but he's hardly an expert. I did read some of the articles because I like Mises in general. But like the Ron Paul institute, not every article reflects the views of the namesake.
What this student gets right, is that like socialists, Nazis like authoritarian control over the means of production. That doesn't mean that fascism is the same as socialism. it means they are on the same end of the spectrum as all statists. The opposite end of anarchists.

Adam Young may well have been 'studying computer science in Ontario, Canada' at the time he wrote that article... but all that tells you is that he was 'studying computer science in Ontario, Canada' at that time...
It doesn't tell you how old he was then, or anything else about his experience/knowledge/qualifications/expertise in any other areas...!
So I don't know why you are trying to stereotype him as being just some 'student'...
No, wait... I can see exactly why you are doing that...!!!

He is just a student. I wrote papers as a student too.
None of that changes the fact that fascism and socialism are both authoritarian systems, but they are not the same. Hitler was a fascist and loathed the socialists.
No doubt that two different authoritarian systems will have many overlapping practices and beliefs because they are both authoritarian.

Re: Winston Churchill-inspired 'Blighty cafe' is stormed by a group of Left-wing protesters who brand Britain's wartime leader a 'racist'
Tommy, here is something about Mises, written by Jeffrey Tucker, who is far more that just a student. It spells out his position much better than a Canadian student who managed to get a paper published in the Mises Institute.
Mises, on the other hand, was not fooled. He was a prophet in understanding the evil of fascism – and six years before everyone else was still heralding the glories of this Italian FDR (which is how people saw Mussolini). Yes, evil. That’s the word Mises uses, which you can easily see from the entire section, which you can and should read. The Fascists and Communists use the same “unscrupulous methods…. Still others, in full knowledge of the evil that Fascist economic policy brings with it, view Fascism, in comparison with Bolshevism and Sovietism, as at least the lesser evil. For the majority of its public and secret supporters and admirers, however, its appeal consists precisely in the violence of its methods.”
Mises clearly condemns this view, pointing out that it is pure historical accident that fascism is less evil than communism; both are ideologies of violence that reject liberalism – the very thing that Mises sought to defend against socialism and fascism. Communism was just more developed; Mises predicts that fascism will eventually be the same. “The great danger threatening domestic policy from the side of Fascism lies in its complete faith in the decisive power of violence. In order to assure success, one must be imbued with the will to victory and always proceed violently. This is its highest principle. What happens, however, when one’s opponent, similarly animated by the will to be victorious, acts just as violently? The result must be a battle, a civil war.”

Also... fascism/socialism = varying degrees of left wing...!
As is communism, another variety of left wing...!
None are small govt/state, small govt/state control, or with the allowance of free market capitalism...!!!

That is wrong... and when you look at the facts of Hitler/nazis socialist policies during the 1930's, you will see why...!
No Tommy. That is correct.

That socialism and fascism are two different system that both suck.
And it's not what I think, but what actually is being said.

I was telling Tommy what von Mises was saying. You don't get to correct one of the greatest economists to walk the planet.

The Fascists and Communists use the same “unscrupulous methods….
von Mises doesn't like Socialism, believing in liberalism, but he never says it's the same as Communism or Fascism.
that's why he put Liberalism in the middle of his graph

Damn boy.
When he refers to liberalism, he is referring to classical liberalism. Not some dopey, whiney left wing vaginas.

I know that's why I disagree with him anyway. Socialism is the best for the most members of a society, But Most members of society don't give economist grants to produce reports for them, So Motivated by Self interest he support the hand that feeds him

Communism and fascism are different, but both are far left forms of authoritarian socialism...!
Socialism always moves increasingly left and increasingly authoritarian... and ever increasingly towards one or other of these two forms... with its ever increasing rules/regulations/controls, always comes the susequent need for ever increasing size of govt/state/bureaucracy/enforcers etc to enact/oversee/enforce it all...!
I think this is what Mises and others were saying...

Then you don't know much about Mises, Hayek or Rothbard.
Statism and authoritarianism can come from the left and the right. Do you think Franco and Pinochet were socialists?
