It's just control - if children have what the school consider a healthy lunch how do they know that the same children are not eating junk food for their evening meal and the children with pack up have a healthy evening meal . Just control again I don't like it - its getting worse .

They should just keep to teaching, but the way kids are ignorant in many ways today they don't seem to be doing a good job with it !

Because precisely that. By ensuring children are eating healthily at lunchtime they are ensuring that those children who are fed junk or those that are poor, get at least one healthy meal a day.
Have you ever worked in a school where some children come in having had nothing for breakfast? Or some children come in eating sweets or crisps, for breakfast? Or some children have a cold McDonald's meal packed up in their lunchbox? (Yes really!! It happens)
It's just a good way of making sure all children get the chance to have some healthy food. What's wrong with that? Let's face it, sausage rolls and pork pies are just absolute pig shit. Literally.

its not their business - nobody would dictate to me what i feed my kids - usually the poor kids get free meals not the kids who take pack up. Still down to the parents not the school .eddie wrote:Vicar of Dibley (vod) wrote:It's just control - if children have what the school consider a healthy lunch how do they know that the same children are not eating junk food for their evening meal and the children with pack up have a healthy evening meal . What is important here is children getting a balanced healthy diet, of which some irresponsible parents are incapable of doing.
The reality is more and more children are obese and this is becoming a massive problem.

So why not only target the fat kids packed lunches for 'inspection' and removal of so called 'unhealthy items'...!?

So you are saying that only obese people are obese and that nobody else ever becomes obese?
Why do you think there is now a policy on school meals in place?

part of me thinks the state has no right to interfere however having worked in schools a lot and been a governor etc I can confirm what eddie said is totally true. some parents have absolutely no idea and if they do they are just too bone idle to do anything about it. some kids coming in having not eaten anthing and have a chocolate spread sandwich and a kitkat for lunch.
in one of the infant schools round my way they actually buy fruit and cut it up for the kids at break time so that each kid manages to get at least half an orange in side them or grapes or whatever is going.
it makes me think,,,,,if the parents are a dead loss then the state has to step in which kind of goes against what i believe in but it's the kids that count ultimately

Its a sad reality that not only faces the UK, but the west per say.
Poor diets and junk food, with a lack of excercize, is creating more and more people being unhealthily overweight. Now some clearly have health conditions around obesity, but they still can stop themselves from eating too much. So there really is no excuses, when people over indulge themselves. It also sets a poor example to children.
I agree its a grey area for then to have the state intervene, but sadly its needed at least within schools to ensure kids get a healthy balanced diet.

What?
Who said they are being given too much fruit?
What did you not understand about a "balanced" healthy diet?

Is that done on a child case by case basis...?
Or is that a fruit for all basis where many of the kids may have already had fruit/juice for breakfast and will be having more in the evening, and maybe also a packed lunch laden with more fruit/juice too etc...!?

Giving more fruit to kids who already have loads of fruit is not 'healthy' or 'balanced' diet...!!!
And is actually bad for them... rots teeth and damages liver...!!!

School meals are not healthy - they have puddings made from sugar and custard . I would have thought a packed lunch with pasta and sauce and fruit is healthier . Its still not the business of the schools to dictate to parents what their children eat .

Exactly. I get that some people dislike being told what to do but the reality is this: some parents have not a clue / don't care / are too poor...so why should the children suffer?
And in any case, it's teaching children about healthy eating and making good food choices. No idea why anyone would oppose that.

Erm the puddings are mostly healthy or at th very least, the children always get an option of fruit or yoghurt.
I was a school governor for five years and one of my achievements was in helping to get an "Healthy eating award" for the school.
I really do know what I'm talking about. This is after an extensive look at food and diets in children, Vod, and why free school meals from 0-7 were introduced.
Don't believe everything you read in the Daily Mail.

more often that not the kids that came in with crappy lunches or the ones whose mum 'forgot' to give them their lunch are also the kids whose parents have to be specifically told about the nits in their kids hair

Its not just that the food is unhealthy, its also about lack of moving. We had mainly cooked dinners in school and at home, the desserts were fairly stodgy, custard, sponge puddings, suet puddings, jam tarts and rice puddings with a dollop of jam. We had no central heating, usually one open fire at home and we were always out running about outside and always ready for the next meal, we needed the calories, there were only one or two children that would be called overweight today, mostly we were quite skinny but with the life style changes now children don't need the calories. The food that's proccessed now is full of chemical fat and piled with sugar - a fairly recent introduction, the oils used in takeaways now is man made and worse that pork fat for clogging up your arteries. My grandparents ate bacon preserved with salt, eggs and fried bread every breakfast, always a Sunday roast with gravy you could cut with a knife, plenty of butter, milk, cheese and pastries and live into their nineties and were fit and well and definately not fat.

incredibly filling and delicious but the thought of it now makes me shudder

Giving fruit to all the kids is only helping the ones who didn't normally get enough fruit... those who did would now be getting too much which is bad for them... and the others who already got too much would be getting even more which would be even worse for them...!
It's the same as making all kids wear an extra jumper because a couple of kids are a bit cold and could do with a jumper... now the cold kids are nicely warm... but the kids who were already nicely warm are too hot... and the kids who were too hot are now dangerously overheating/dehydrating because of that extra layer of well intended smothering...!!!
Would you also put all kids on a diet just cos a few were a bit fat and needed to slim down a bit...?
Just to be 'fair and equal' to all... and to be seen as treating them all 'the same'... all in the name of 'diversity'...!?
But that makes the average kids into skinny kids... and the skinny kids into anorexics with serious potential health consequences...!!!
Would you then force feed all the kids to try to help the skinny and anorexic ones back to normal sizes...?
But then end up with the newly assisted fat to normal kids back into fatties again...!?
How can anyone try to judge what might be a balanced diet or not for anyone else when they are only seeing one small part of the overall daily intake, and that being only 5 days out of 7...!?
I bet many parents are giving their kids a tasty snack filled packed lunch for a number of reasons...
1) Cos they know that kid likes it and will actually eat it instead of throwing it away etc...
2) The kid normally eats much more healthier stuff the majority of time so is bit of treat to help make them enjoy the idea of going to school a bit more than hating it... plus overall still constitutes balanced diet...
3) Is still much better than the muck they serve as school dinners!!! And cheaper!!!

No... your problem is that you can't tell truth from bullshit, but you always end up proclaiming to know what the truth really smells like... while being covered in some stinky bullshit that you have been happily rolling around in...!

And cheaper!!!
no because the parents who put in an apple or banana or whatever in their kids lunch will know that wont they. if they also know that they are going to get at least some fruit also at school then they can balance that.
5 a day remember (fruit and vet). even if they kid then goes home and has carrots and cabbage with his meal, that's still only 4. it would not be too much at all.
i think there should be much education for kids - videos, stories involving bad diets and good diets and the differences it can make.
behaviour
moods, emotions
concentration, focus
that's apart from the biological aspect of the human body needing a good balance to function properly.
we need kids to be asking their parents for healthy foods - not relying on the schools to provide it
food is the body's fuel -
garbage in garbage out, as they say

and even the '5 a day' is low
in Australia it is 7 a day
and some are now pushing 10 a day (but that seems like a lot of total food volume)

I'M with eddie, Thorin and gelico on this issue...
Something has to be done to counter increasing malnutrition and lack of activity amongst many young people today, often largely down to ignorant and bone-lazy parents..
No real surprise to see VoD and Tommy backing the bad diets and bad parents -- those two braindead nongs are regularly seen to be supporting the 'wrong' side of these discussions.
If Tommy truly believes that half an orange or a bunch of grapes is too much for a primary school child, he really is a know-nothing twonk !!!

Don't believe everything you read in the Daily Mail.

They look what's in them yes - my kids never liked school meals so they both had packed lunch- I did have one dinner lady question me as to why my son had cold pasta in his lunch box - I told her its none of her business and that my son will eat what i give him . Pasta can be eaten hot or cold - there are even vegie snacks now that can be added to packed lunches - its just schools dictating what kids should eat - I wouldn't trust the food given to kids - most of it is shit processed food anyway .

I quite like the government caring about what my child eats at school and for my child to be given free fruit and vegetables at break time.
Don't understand your point tbh.
You allowed your kids to be told what to eat when they were given shite for school meals but you ain't keen on your child's school making them eat healthily??
Go figure.

How do you know its healthy food ? Dictating what children eat is just the same as the government telling you - you have to have your kids vaccinated with the flu jab- you didn't agree with that did you - I remember that debate on here .
Schools are just the start of it - if you can control what children are eating at a young age you can pump them with anything -any old shit .And how would you feel if the government suddenly decided that in their opinion your favourite food was unhealthy and banned it completely . How come the government is so interested in the health of our children that there is still aspartame in drinks and ridiculous amounts of sugar - additives to all the food on the menu , and do you think its right that parents who don't agree with halal food their children are forced to eat it as its the only food on the menu .

The people opposing this because they 'don't want the governmemt to decide what their kids eat' have a simple solution- give them a packed lunch!
You weren't bothered when the schools were feeding them pork pies and sausage rolls but kick up a fuss over extra fruit! For real?
If you don't want to let schools feed your kids fruit and veg then give them a packed lunch. Eaay as.

lol did you read the article mate?
As you are kind of missing the point on packed lunches also being a problem.
The policy, led by Government guidelines, says pupils are encouraged to show their packed lunches to a member of staff before and after they have eaten, especially in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 and states: 'Pork pies, sausage rolls, pepperoni sticks are high in salt and saturated fat. 'These items should not be included in a pupils packed lunchbox. If found a parent will be called.
'Desserts, cakes, biscuits and crisps: these foods are high in saturated fat, sugar and salt - too much of these foods can be harmful to health. If a pupil has more than one of these items in their lunchbox they will be removed by staff and returned to the child at the end of the day.'

School meals - healthy eating standards
Food served in some schools and academies in England must meet the school food standards so that children have healthy, balanced diets.
The school food standards apply to all maintained schools, and academies that were founded before 2010 and after June 2014. They must provide:
- high-quality meat, poultry or oily fish
- fruit and vegetables
- bread, other cereals and potatoes
There can’t be:
- drinks with added sugar, crisps, chocolate or sweets in school meals and vending machines
- more than 2 portions of deep-fried, battered or breaded food a week
You can read more about school food standards on the School Food Plan website.
Find out if your child can get free school meals.

Still, I agree, there really is no problem. What is wrong with helping kids eat healthily?

I got a 'red' from the fucktards corner..
If I can get a red from the junk food addicts/guvm'nt conspiracy nutters brigade, that has to be nearly better than a 'green' from the more intelligent posters on here !

Just control again I don't like it - its getting worse .
Literally.
I agree

I would say they were justified in giving a red to such a daft post, as are cakes and biscuits forbidden in Islam?
