Indian teenager, 17, who was abandoned by her boyfriend and family for getting pregnant is forced to give birth in the STREET after a health centre refused to help her 'because she was on her own'
An abandoned teenager was forced to give birth to her baby on the side of the road after health centre staff refused to help her.
The 17-year-old girl, from Saraikela-Kharsawan district, in Jharkhand, eastern India, was in a relationship with a man in her village when she fell pregnant.
He left the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, when she told him she was pregnant, and her family turned their backs on her fearing they would be shamed.
Om Prakash Sharma, 50, a resident of the area, said: 'The mother and baby were lying on the street in pain. I put roadblocks around them so that they don't get hit by any vehicle.
'A man went to the health centre asking for help but they refused. They said they couldn't admit the girl as she had no guardian to take responsibility for her. We then informed the police.'
Eventually Dr Lakhindra Hansda, a medical officer, at Chandil Sub Divisional Hospital, came out to cut the umbilical cord.
Om Prackash managed to hail an auto rickshaw before a group of ladies were able to finally admit the girl and baby into Chandil Sub Divisional Hospital, where the two were eventually treated.
Dr Lalita Kashyap, a medical officer, at Chandil Sub Divisional Hospital, said: 'Whatever has happened was wrong and unfortunate. There were only two nurses at the health centre, who were busy delivering twin babies when we were informed about the girl.

I feel so sorry for her. India isn't great on looking after the girls there are they.
No ambulance, no doctors, just that poor girl alone in the road giving birth.
Disgusting treatment.

The sad thing is that now she will be left to fend for herself and her baby.

They'd still be burning widows if they had their way.

India is no longer a "poor" country, economically, these days...
They have the 4th or 5th largest economy, when that "price parity" comparisons is used -- however, with more than a billion people, they have one of the largest proportions (around 80% plus ?) living in poverty..
India has actually been knocking back foreign assistance over recent years -- how much has Britain actually donated to India recently ???
At their current rate of economic growth and expansion, they should have the world's 2nd largest economy before the end of this century --and may well be #1 when the next century rolls on around..
India has a lot of ongoing problems that affect the great majority of their citizens, including :
* No universal/national health system
* Little other "social welfar"
* Low regard for life in general
* Ongoing effects from their "caste" system -- even though anti-discrimination laws were introduced years ago, class discrimination, bigotry and sexism are rife;
* Even though technically a "secular 'liberal' democratic" republic (while still bowing to their long history of a monarchy..) in theory, with a parliament and legal system based on Britain's Westminster system, there are still problems with traditions, parochialism, provincialism, a "rape culture" in some regions, and "honour killings" still occurring in some areas -- all in all, making it that much harder for young mothers, single mothers, young people in general, the poor, disabled and dispossessed...
* Despite ongoing re-forrestation and farm-revival efforts in recent years, India's environment is still a tragic basket case
* Water quality and sanitation remain the leading health problems, overall.
