Violent crime up 18%
Crime in England and Wales has seen its largest annual rise in a decade, according to the Office for National Statistics.
The total number of crimes reported to and recorded by the police rose by 10% between April 2016 and March 2017 to almost five million.
Violent crime was up by 18%, robbery by 16% and sex offences by 14%.
Yet the Crime Survey of England and Wales, based on people's experiences of crime, showed a 7% drop.
The Crime Survey is always published on the same day as the ONS figures. Its results are based on a face-to-face survey of 38,000 adults and children in which they are asked about their experiences of crime in the previous year - which means it does include crimes that are never reported to the police.
'High harm offences'
In the ONS statistics, nearly five million crimes were recorded by the police in the last year - 458,021 more than the previous year.
The number of offences of violence against a person went up to 175,060 offences.
Theft was up 7%, with 118,774 crimes recorded, and public order offences rose 39% to 78,697.
There were 723 homicides in the past year - made up of murders, manslaughter and infanticide cases.
The official figure included the 96 Hillsborough deaths for the first time, following the verdict at the end of the inquest in April 2016 that the victims had been unlawfully killed 27 years earlier.
However, even without this number, there was still a 9% rise in homicide.
There was also a 23% increase in firearms offences - equalling a further 1,200 crimes - and a 20% increase in knife crime - meaning 5,800 more offences.

It will be difficult for the conservatives to lay the blame at Corbyn's door.
I expect them ( and a few on here) to try.

Violent leftys and the labour legacy of mass immigration may account for a lot...

More likely the Tories were too busy concocting schemes to short protective services for the poor, and cut taxes for the rich.

Lefty labour policy of soft on crime and excuses made for perpetrators, resulting in repeat offenders avoiding prison time after time, plus mass immigration of unskilled and unwanted 3rd world lay abouts creating thug ridden ghettos...

So nothing to do with the reduction of 23000 coppers on the beat, patrolling local neighbourhoods, interacting with local communities and getting intel off local contacts?

Constant percentage, when the base number is reduced, means a reduction of real numbers of front-line roles.
You've just admitted the fact, tommy. Tories are reducing protections, so as to lower taxes.

Re: Violent crime up 18%
Hardly...
A reduction overall of about 500 a year, is not a huge reduction of numbers, or a massive cash saving in the grand scheme of things...
Especially as the leftys have been telling us how crime has been falling for the last 20 years or so...

So you say, tommy...
That's a judgment that you are making, without substantiation. I'd question whether a reduction of over 10% would be de minimus. Note, it's not "the same" as you initially posted:

Haha...seems your argument is meeting the slippery slope of reality.

I don't think so Tommy. Our PCC and MP have just been to London to tell the govt that we are at crisis point and need more police now. 100 incidents involving firearms in 18 months. Police no longer investigate burglary unless perp still on scene. We have policing by appointment where people are waiting weeks for an officer to call. The met, GMP merseyside and other forces are advertising for retired police to go back on short term contracts as they can't cope.

Re: Violent crime up 18%
pffft ....
round here we havn't noticed any difference ...we didnt see any "beat coppers" 16 years ago...we dont see any now...so.........
we have a "plastic policeman" one of "blunkets boys" and thats our lot....it is rumoured that we in fact DO have a "real policeman" .... and one intermittantly turns up at parish council meetings but is NEVER seen "on the beat"
and...I have a feeling that even IF we recruited a million more police we STILL wouldnt see one...nor would their interest in dealing with crime such as burglary increase...
the police today are nothing more than a revenue stream (via fines) in the war on motorists and the govts private militia empowered to crush public dissent....
We had all te copper gas pipe stripped of the underside of our caravan (scrap value about £1)
which caused £350 damage (repair costs....) a week later we got a copper out to consider doing nothing (the pikeys concerned now having left the area....how convenient) and a further week later a very sweet young filly called a victim support officer...in case we were "traumatised" by such a heinous crime she was a lovely lass, but sadly, in all honesty, I couldnt make use of her services. Had I been single AND considerably younger, I might have been terribly traumatised and required her regular attendance
I now have a fairly sophisticated alarm system for the exterior of my property, and a baseball bat by the front door........

I wonder if they would let us have one of those "poachers alarms" a length of Fishing line attached to the trigger of a Shotgun that when tripped sends a charge of dust shot, [or SSG] preferably, at knee level at the intruder?

Thats what the bbc article says...
The police are too busy watching all the dangerous Muslim terrorists and chasing after all violent black gang thugs that labour let into the country...
