Crime up 14% - Big rises in sexual assault, knife and violent crime
Recorded crime has gone up by 14 per cent in a year, new official police figures show, as robbery, mugging and violent crime all increased.
Overall the statistics, which record the number of crimes reported to police over the last year in England and Wales, paint a dramatic picture of increased offending in almost every category.
Robbery is up by 29 per cent compared to the previous year, while stalking is up 36 per cent and rape 29 per cent. Knife crime is up by 21 per cent.
Public order offences have increased more then any other area, by 44 per cent, while possession of a weapon has also increased dramatically by 26 per cent.
Drug offences have fallen, as have non-domestic burglary crimes, but in every other area increases have been reported.

It's those Brexit voters. If they're not closing borders, they are robbing liquor stores.

All the fault of the stupid Magistrates and Judges who don't live in the real World when it comes to giving out suitable sentences ! They think a "smack on the wrist" and a few hours non paid work will make criminals think twice before offending.

And absolutely NOTHING to do with the reduction in the oolice force by 20%.
Or perhaps , just perhaps, thd two are linked.

I think crime will always rise. People are getting too used to violence and it’s become a ‘nothingness’, now.

The police are normally only involved AFTER a crime has already been committed...
So the blame ultimately lays with the individuals who are committing the crimes!!!

That's simply not true. On the side of every police car of the Los Angeles Police Department it reads: To Protect and Serve. The mission of a police force is twofold: 1) to bring a case after the law has been broken, yes; but 2) to maintain the peace in the first place.
The motto is Law and Order. Police must apply the law in a court, but their main objective is to maintain the order. The majority of police efforts and resources are devoted to maintaining the peace while on the street. That's what SWAT teams are for. That's what police vehicles are for. Indeed, that's what uniformed patrolmen are for. They create a presence, on the spot, to stop crime. They carry guns, not to look good in court, but to stop a malefactor on the spot.

That sorta made sense. I'll be damned, you can be lucid. At least before you hit the Cabernet too hard.

Come off it Quill... the police can't be everywhere all the time, pre-empting and preventing every attempted crime...
Unless you think there should be police on every street in the country all the times, and/or every person in the country is required to have a police escort at all times...!?

Thanks. I taught law and criminal justice at the Silverbell Police Academy, of the University of Arizona. The two-pronged approach of policing was a part of my intro course.
Oh, and um...the doctors haven't let me drink for some 5-years. Damn their eyes!

True, but it isn't for lack of trying. Police are even taught tricks to make themselves more visible. For example, motorcycle units are taught to lane split at a stoplight, to make every driver stopped aware of their presence. Police cars are made conspicuous so that they are noticed. And those flashing lights are made to attract your attention.

Would that they could afford that. But they try. You are pointing out how difficult it is. But that''s not the point. The police are taught to make you aware of their presence at all times, so that they are fulfilling their 'order' function.

Perhaps if there were proper sentences handed down for crimes committed there might be less of them. Our prisons are like Holiday Camps, TV's, Gyms, Drugs, Booze etc.

Perhaps. The sentences in the UK that I've heard of seem to be--shall we say--overly genteel.

Then you wouldn't like the ones they hand out in Norway.

I don't know. Even what I'm familiar with in the UK is anecdotal.

Donald Trump admires Norway...
He keeps on holding it up as one example of a successful modern-day democratic/capitalist paradise success story that you could aspire to..
