Man shot himself in the head but survived. The bullet killed his girlfriend, and he's charged with murder
An Alaska man who cops say unintentionally killed his girlfriend as she tried saving him from a suicide attempt now faces murder charges.
Victor Sibson, 21, turned himself in Friday after a warrant was issued for his arrest in the April 19 death of 22-year-old Brittany-Mae Haag.
Authorities believe Sibson was most likely sitting down when he attempted to shoot himself in the head using his left hand. Haag, they believe, reached for the gun with her right hand, according to the Anchorage prosecutor's office.
Police say they arrived to find a single shot through Sibson's head and a single shot through Haag's chest at the armpit.
Sibson survived, but Haag — his high school sweetheart — did not.
While authorities first believed it to be a murder-attempted suicide case, they have since changed their theory and believe Sibson only meant to take his own life.
It's a sad turn of events that prosecutor James Fayette is calling an "extreme-indifference killing."
According to police, Sibson's blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit at the time of the shooting.
Sibson was later released from the hospital. Doctors say the bullet didn't enter his brain.
Sibson was indicted on a second-degree murder charge last week. A $250,000 warrant was issued for his arrest before he turned himself in Friday.
If convicted he could face up to 99 years in prison, according to Fayette.

That's some fucked up shit.
Reminds me of a novel I read years ago by Jodi Picoult called 'The pact'
"The Pact paints a portrait of families in anguish over a suicide pact between a teenage couple which leaves one of them dead and the other one on trial for murder."

It was a very good read actually.

He'll get off on grounds of 'accidental death'. He might get caught on charges of attempted suicide, if Alaska has such a law. Or, reckless discharge of a firearm within city limits. But 2nd-degree murder...no.
The causal connection is broken by accidental result...he didn't point the gun at the girl, nor did he intend her death. It's simply: gun went off; not directed at her; she was in the path of the bullet...it killed her. There was no animosity...nor even intent. It was entirely an accident.

Actually, truth-be-told, doctors are still looking for his brain. It was listed as missing before the incident.

Hahaha. Dunno why but I've got a collection of weird shooting stories.
There was one florida woman who shot her poor 25yo daughter, thinking she was an intruder. Tragic!
Here's another odd one ... a cop called Golightly accidentally shot his mum at a wedding in church. (you know, as you do ...)! His boss sacked him and I don't think his mum was too pleased either. > >
