Originally entitled Mbube (the last word in the first stanza)--not exactly "whim-away", but more like Mmm-baeb-way--it was written in the 1920's by Solomon Linda, a South African singer of Zulu origin.  It was originally released in 1939 by  Gallo Record Company in Johannesburg.
