Teenage refugee held over rape and murder of top EU official’s daughter

A 17-year-old Afghan refugee has been arrested on suspicion of raping and murdering the teenage daughter of a senior EU official in Germany.

The Afghan, who arrived unaccompanied last year among the huge influx of almost a million migrants, was linked by DNA to the death of Maria Ladenburger, a 19-year-old medical student found drowned in Freiburg in southwestern Germany.

Ladenburger was last seen ­cycling home from a party in the university city in October and her body was found in the river Dreisam the next day. She had volunteered as a helper at a refugee centre but it was not known whether she had met her alleged killer before the night of her murder.
