What?
The current laws reflect my opinions.
What he means is you can't turn to the law as though it were the absolute beacon of righteousness- the law once outlawed 'us' for instance, and people arguing against gay rights would have said 'well the law agrees with me'.
I agree with you much of the time on gay rights catman but our argument is strong enough without simply referring to the law as our back up.

Haha, think I've mentioned a few times now it's Thailand (my dad makes the same mistake all the time, to be fair it's far less understandable from him haha)
May; May 25th to be exact- I'm counting down the days

I can't see any problem in referring to the law of the land as a back up to an argument tbf.

Because the law isn't an absolute and referring to it is nothing more than a lazy cop-out by someone who can't defend their opinion.

So, imagine if possible, that you are a gay rights activist in 1966, a year before the decriminalization of homosexuality. Some old bigot you are arguing with says that it goes against human decency to allow such things as sex between two men, and the LAW AGREES with him- would that have been a credible and valid argument at the time?
^of course Tea, plenty will be forthcoming, planning a trip to Japan in the next 12 months too which will be nice additions to the collection Hope all is well with you btw

Well, the law agreed with him at the time...The law was unjust and was fought against and then changed over time.

Well, the law agreed with him at the time...The law was unjust and was fought against and then changed over time.
So the law then is only there at the will of the consensus- then just throwing it at someone as though it makes your argument more solid and more 'right' is pretty fallacious. I appreciate the law is now on our side, as it should be. But to someone defending free speech as the pinnacle of civilization; you claiming the 'law' is against them wont wash, the same as it wouldn't have done for you and me in 1966- if the law does ban people from saying certain things then they will simply argue the law is wrong; as it was once for us.

Bit slow there catman; it wont wash WITH THEM, ie: the person you would be arguing with- backing your argument with the law is as much a waste of time as them using the law in 1966. It means nothing- it just means you are so incapable of backing your opinion with sound logic and reasoning you just resort to 'the cops are on my side'- presumably you would tell a gay Russian, complaining they can't speak about gay rights in school, that they are wrong cause the Kremlin says so

People need to get out there, and try to change laws that they don't agree with, try to get some experience of doing that. :D

What has that got to do with what I just said? I agree with the law as it stands.
So would you prefer every Right Winger who thinks free speech is being suppressed go out on the streets and force a change in the law? Do you just want conflict with people?
So how about that gay Russian? Are they wrong cause the law says so?
(Btw I totally got your vindictive little slur there. Thankfully I am able to enjoy life, and don't look for conflict where there is none, now why not stick to debate instead of trying to throw spiteful comments out eh phil?)
