Osborne's very own OBR reports that immigration has a positive effect on the economy.
Immigration has “beneficial” economic effects and cutting the number of foreign workers in the UK will make it harder for the Government to clear its deficit, the Treasury’s own economic forecasters have said.
The Office for Budget Responsibility told MPs that immigration has a positive impact on the public finances.
Robert Chote, head of the OBR, said that immigration "does tend to produce a more beneficial picture" for the Government’s finances.
“Because they’re more likely to be working age, they’re more likely to be paying taxes and less likely to have relatively large sums of money spent on them for education, for long-term care, for healthcare, for pension expenditure,”
Mr Chote was expanding on the OBR’s long-standing assessment that Britain needs a steady flow of migrant labour to fund public services in the coming decades.
In a report published in 2013, the OBR said that more migrants are needed to fund the rising cost of pensions, social care and the NHS.
If immigration runs at 140,000 a year, the national debt will reach around 99 per cent of the entire economy in 50 years time, the OBR said.
David Cameron has pledged to cut net immigration to “tens of thousands”, though last year, the figure was still above 180,000.
The OBR’s calculations show that the closer Mr Cameron gets to his target, the harder it will be for the British Government to balance its books in the long term.
Without any immigration, the national debt will soar to 175 per cent of GDP in 50 years, the OBR says.

Certainly makes you wonder what state the economy would have been in without all the immigration. And the OBR report raises concerns about cutting the numbers down to the figures that David Cameron wants to get to.
Worrying, isn't it?

I don't know how UK conservatives will respond to that. Here in the U.S. they'd just say the report was a lying report by lying liberal lefty liars, then stick their fingers in their ears and go "NANANANANA I can't hear you, lefty lying liberal low-life larceny-loving layabout!"

The cap doffers and forelock would have a bit of difficulty doing that with this report because its from the OBR which was set up specifically by Osborne.
Mind you, government departments set up by Osborne are making a habit of correcting him like the Office for Tax Simplification did when they told him the UK tax code wasn't as long or as complicated as he said it was.

Well you have made it clear whether or not this is the case that your politicians feel they shouldn't have to listen to the electorate. The electorate can't be trusted leave it to the politicians. Where have we heard that before?
Was it the Soviet Union?
Of course it was comrades.
Is it patriotic now to suppress democracy Irn Bru. Clearly in your distorted Dystopian society it is.

You are not up to speed Drinky. I'm all for a referendum to get this settled once and for all.

Agreed, then if we stay in people won't be able to say the majority don't want it, and if we leave they will have to get their fingers out and find a way to make it work, because they won't be able to say they didn't want it. Win win situation.
