It's selfish attitudes like Stormees that has childhood asthma in full epidemic mode.
Nothing spoils a nice walk in the neighborhood like being able to smell burnt fuel everywhere you go.

Re: Diesel Or Petrol Vehicles
biggest problem is....
some vehicles are just pathetic in petrol....
if you need sheer grunt you need diesel
a lower powerband and more torque for your gallon....
a petrol campervan is a pitiful thing indeed...unless its got a 5L gas guzzler it cant "pull an old hen off the nest"
a petrol suv is as much use as a moped underwater unless again its got a 5l gas guzzler
NOW...that might be ok over your way ben, what with your virtually free fuel but its NOt a sensible option here....

I've got a diesel and the fuel consumption is so much better and the performance is just as good. The engines are just more efficient.
I'll never get anothe petrol motor.

Heh heh, we're no Argentina ... they can't profit off fuel these days from what I hear.
Re: Diesel Or Petrol Vehicles
THE DIESELS that Ben is complaining about, are those old school (Euro' standard 3, 4 (& 5 (I think ?)) and older..) -- where exhaust particulates, NOx and sulphorous smells are much higher...
Aussie standards are a step behind Europe in this regard (though anyone buying new vehicles here, will get the Euro' standard anyway); but this is one area where the USA is,still a step behind (and South American countries still another another step behind again..).
There are 3 or 4 "new generation" Asian built utility and SUV diesels (Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan..) among near neighbours here, and you don't smell them when they drive past..
DIESEL MOTORS are still the most efficient and effective affordable power sources for those who want or need trucks, utes/pickups, or want their 4WDs/SUVs for 'serious' offroad use.
IT WILL be a while yet before alternatives such as electric motors or hydrogen cells make serious inroads into this heavy vehicle corner of the market..
Electric vehicles work okay for commercial suburban runabouts, but are still much too expensive for longer range and larger capacity use; while electric powered offroaders are both too expensive, and still a bit short on effective range from the closest power points..
AND when petroleum based fuels eventually do become too expensive due to increasing scqrcity, diesel engines can quite easily be retuned to run on biodiesels -- where the quality of the fuel is the main hurdle for some users..
(Just Personally, my SUV 'wagon has a 4 litre petrol engine -- but getting a dual-fuel LPG conversion was one of the first improvements I had done there; and it does have a 2.3 tonne towing capacity (1.2 tonnes lower than the later diesel version..) -- if/when I look at buying a ute (pickup) or truck, it will be a diesel -- naturally..).

And petrol engines can be converted to run on gas.
