Diesel And Petrol Ban: Four Reasons Why Electric Cars Will Be Ready By 2040
The government’s ban on diesel and petrol cars by 2040 has been met with a mixture of reactions from calls praising it to claims that there needs to be more detail on how it will be enforced. Finally there are some arguing that compared to other countries, particularly in Europe, the 2040 deadline doesn’t go anywhere near far enough.
Either way you look at the decision, its effects will be felt most prominently by us, the consumers.

If you live in a 10 story flat how are you going to charge your car, it will be only those who have garages and Drives who can have charge points. Or are we to have thousands of Electric cables coming down from flats all over the roads? Ps what happened to LPG?

Another thing that the politicians and "futurists" fail to explain...
How are they going to "force" the world's truck drivers, farmers, shipping companies, forestry companies, fishermen, and other commercial users of millions of diesel, petrol and gas (lpg, lng..) powered vehicles to change over to electric-powered vehicles in less than 25 years..
When the changeover costs are still too prohibitive, the auto-makers don't really have the capacity yet anyway -- and like nicko suggests, there still aren't enough recharging points (nor the output from power stations)..
Maybe they will be able to replace all of the infernal combustion engines over the next 50--60 years, but less than 23 years still seems a bit of a fanciful stretch ?

Can some one explain why LPG is not being pushed as an alternative to Petrol/Diesel?

Possibly shows how much influence lobbyists for petroleum interests carry within some governments ???
I run my Ford Territory SUV on LPG probably over 90% of the time; and have done so for the past 6 years or so, with no problems..
With regard to diesel engines, "Biodiesel" (mostly brewed from Canola/rapeseed oil..), hydrogen cells, and Liquefied Natural Gas ('LNG') are other alternatives for fuelling current design diesel engines; (With LPG injection systems in diesel engines, the LPG is injected into the diesel injection spray (i.e. it doesn't actually replace the diesel -- but acts as an additive..) helping the diesel to burn more efficiently and cleaner, and improving mileage..).
Australia is one of the largest producers and exporters of both Natural Gas and LPG, and yet over the last couple of years we have had threatened domestic shortages and wildly rising prices -- basically because of 'sweetheart deals' that the Federal guvm'nt had made with exporting companies when granting them extraction licenses -- allowing them to gear up for bulk export markets, while virtually ignoring the home markets..

With regards to the O/P :
I can well imagine that many large cities (such as London, Paris, Munich, Moscow, Shanghai, Hong Kong, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, Mexico City, Sydney, Melbourne, Tokyo, Jakarta, KL..) will have banned infernal combustion engines within the next 20 years...
Pollution and health effects will mean electric powered cars, buses and delivery trucks/vans only past certain points;
While ever-increasing congestion may mean bans against private cars past certain points..
However, those self-same governments may find themseves in for a fight from both commercial interests, and private citizens out in the regions and remote areas, if they attempt to force them into buying non-viable electric powered vehicles, that simply aren't yet "suitable for purpose".
The changeover costs in unrealistically short time frames would simply be too crippling !!!
