Netherlands moots electric car future with petrol and diesel ban by 2025
Dutch politicians have voted through a motion calling on the country to ban sales of new petrol and diesel cars starting in 2025. The motion has only passed through the lower house of the Netherlands’ parliament, and would need to pass through the Dutch senate to become legally binding. But its success in a majority vote puts the earliest date yet on just when a major country might begin phasing out polluting transportation. Initially, the motion – proposed by the Labour Party (PvdA), the junior member of the Netherlands’ coalition government – aimed to ban petrol and diesel cars entirely, but it was dialled back. As it stands, the proposal would allow existing cars to stay in use, but would “strive to prevent” the sales of any future ones, ensuring that Dutch roads gradually electrify over the next decade or so. But the motion was opposed by the Labour Party’s coalition partners, the centre-right VVD, whose leader, Halbe Zijlstra, called the plan “unrealistic”, according to a report from the Dutch state broadcaster NOS. Zijlstra was particularly concerned about whether or not the proposed law would conflict with the country’s energy agreement, which commits the Netherlands to certain decarbonisation targets by 2020.

Better ban Volcanos,methane from undersea sources as well. And what will be used to provide all the extra electricity that will be needed?
just curious.

And what will be used to provide all the extra electricity that will be needed? I am assuming solar, if the same progress is made in the next 10 years as the last 10 years this is more than possible
just curious.

CONSIDERING that a similar sized electric car is nearly double the purchase price of small and medium sized infernal combustion vehicles, a lot of Dutchies will be forced out onto bicycles and 'shank's pony' after the eventual changeover date (which will probably be another 5-10 years after their mooted day, anyway..).
JUST AS WELL Holland is such a small country, isn't it !
(And, also just as well, is the fact that a lot less people in Holland, France and the likes depend on driving -- as a % of the population -- compared with countries with crap 'public transport' systems, the likes of the USA, Canada, Australia, NZ and Britain..).
AND : How many people will be subsequently unemployed -- mechanics, service station workers -- they can't all be re-deployed to wrecking yards and car detailing..
WONDER what it would do to their national economy ?
JUST IMAGINE :
Existing cars crash in value, as the only market will be to export them to other countries;
Existing service stations need to (gradually) convert fully to charging and servicing new vehicles (Admittedly, this would be over 10-15 years, or more, as aging cars gradually replaced -- but still..);
PLUS there will be less need for service stations, when electric vehicles can be be recharged at work places, carparks, even at home;
Transport companies, bus, taxi and ambulance operators, and military lumbered with cost of converting fleets to electric;
Inflation goes up as transport costs rise as result of extra changeover costs..
I WONDER just how well the Netherlands guvm'nt has thought this proposition through ?

@wolf
they have, it will go this way everywhere
it wont affect any one that is not already going to be affected as it is NEW cars only. All mechanics are going to have to learn about electric motors etc eventually.
And less erivces stations GOOD!!!! that is the fucking point!!!!
