Why Is Everyone on the Internet So Angry?
With a presidential campaign, health care and the gun control debate in the news these days, one can't help getting sucked into the flame wars that are Internet comment threads. But psychologists say this addictive form of vitriolic back and forth should be avoided — or simply censored by online media outlets — because it actually damages society and mental health.
These days, online comments "are extraordinarily aggressive, without resolving anything," said Art Markman, a professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. "At the end of it you can't possibly feel like anybody heard you. Having a strong emotional experience that doesn't resolve itself in any healthy way can't be a good thing."
If it's so unsatisfying and unhealthy, why do we do it?
A perfect storm of factors come together to engender the rudeness and aggression seen in the comments' sections of Web pages, Markman said. First, commenters are often virtually anonymous, and thus, unaccountable for their rudeness. Second, they are at a distance from the target of their anger — be it the article they're commenting on or another comment on that article — and people tend to antagonize distant abstractions more easily than living, breathing interlocutors. Third, it's easier to be nasty in writing than in speech, hence the now somewhat outmoded practice of leaving angry notes (back when people used paper), Markman said. [Infographic: A Typical Day on the Internet]
And because comment-section discourses don't happen in real time, commenters can write lengthy monologues, which tend to entrench them in their extreme viewpoint. "When you're having a conversation in person, who actually gets to deliver a monologue except people in the movies? Even if you get angry, people are talking back and forth and so eventually you have to calm down and listen so you can have a conversation," Markman told Life's Little Mysteries.
Chiming in on comment threads may even give one a feeling of accomplishment, albeit a false one. "There is so much going on in our lives that it is hard to find time to get out and physically help a cause, which makes 'armchair activism' an enticing [proposition]," a blogger at Daily Kos opined in a July 23 article.
And finally, Edward Wasserman, Knight Professor in Journalism Ethics at Washington and Lee University, noted another cause of the vitriol: bad examples set by the media. "Unfortunately, mainstream media have made a fortune teaching people the wrong ways to talk to each other, offering up Jerry Springer, Crossfire, Bill O'Reilly. People understandably conclude rage is the political vernacular, that this is how public ideas are talked about," Wasserman wrote in an article on his university's website. "It isn't."
Communication, the scholars say, is really about taking someone else's perspective, understanding it, and responding. "Tone of voice and gesture can have a large influence on your ability to understand what someone is saying," Markman said. "The further away from face-to-face, real-time dialogue you get, the harder it is to communicate."
In his opinion, media outlets should cut down on the anger and hatred that have become the norm in reader exchanges. "It's valuable to allow all sides of an argument to be heard. But it's not valuable for there to be personal attacks, or to have messages with an extremely angry tone. Even someone who is making a legitimate point but with an angry tone is hurting the nature of the argument, because they are promoting people to respond in kind," he said. "If on a website comments are left up that are making personal attacks in the nastiest way, you're sending the message that this is acceptable human behavior." [Niceness Is in Your DNA, Scientists Find]
For their part, people should seek out actual human beings to converse with, Markman said — and we should make a point of including a few people in our social circles who think differently from us. "You'll develop a healthy respect for people whose opinions differ from your own," he said.
Working out solutions to the kinds of hard problems that tend to garner the most comments online requires lengthy discussion and compromise. "The back-and-forth negotiation that goes on in having a conversation with someone you don't agree with is a skill," Markman said. And this skill is languishing, both among members of the public and our leaders.

It's worrying; IRL some people wouldn't behave the way they do online, or say the things they say.
Are we paving the way for people to just be vile to eachother?
What is the solution?

No reprisal, except verbal...which only prompts a response, and the beat goes on.
IRL means just that: there can be consequences. We avoid those consequences in real life. But on the Internet, there are no consequences.

I don't really understand why SOME people are vile on the internet, maybe a mix of RL frustration and the inability to vent their frustrations in a humane way......so they log on in the comfort of their own homes and feel protected.... they then feel free to let rip with all the stuff they are too cowardly or afraid to say in their day to day lives.
I also think some peoples lives are boring, so they enjoy the excitement created by online abuse....sad but true imo.

It is a mixture of real life frustration I think and also insecurity.
People who are insecure are often horrible about others.

One of the nastiest people I ever knew on forums admitted he was hen pecked at home. He seemed to adore his wife who obviously had the upper hand, yet he frequently targeted women online, following them round various forums, and always tried to join others in his little vendettas.
Also some people who have been publicly named and shamed are supposedly intelligent people who are respected in the community who somehow need to vent their spleens on complete strangers on social media sites.

It all stems from insecurity. Mean people are insecure and unhappy; and it starts in their childhood/teens.

Re: Why Is Everyone on the Internet So Angry?
Or start a method of greeting new comers by attacking/ridiculing and trying to force people to type/post and think alike and when they don't - the pack attack method is usually the way that a 'GANG' attempts to force humans to conform!
But that rarely ever works the way that 'the pack' would prefer so the 'group mentality' is to gather in their cluster and lick their wounds - reconsider their options and wait for another opportunity.
On FB they just 'unfriend/block' instead of just ignoring those few political or religious blathering daily diatribes that fill a days page.
People that need to classify/box and quantify 'how those OTHERS' behave generally will find the simplest terminology in which to explain how the 'ANGRY PEOPLE' are; 'ya, that's exactly what/why they behave that way'; as if they've had the years of training it takes to fathom those social issues and can just explain it away in just so many easy words. IF ONLY!
And as so many of the topics that are generated around here get started with:
What the hell is wrong with 'YOU' ...or 'Who would you want to' ...or 'What nice thing would you say to the following member' ...
Grade school party games - attempted in an open forum that isn't managed by anyone seated in one room controlling the SCRIPT of what we are to say; Adults just don't play that way and this isn't grade/grammar school and we live in such diverse settings - have our own lives to deal with that none of you really - truly know!
There are a lot of economic - political - social issues going on at home {behind the scenes} and people are using this media source as their communication ...GOOD/BAD/UGLY, because misery does like company and people do share their burdens with each other - ideas - solutions - crafts - reading material - movies. etc., etc., etc.,
It's what humans do ...some days we suck at it - some days it all sun shine and daisies!

Yes, some people are just nasty.
It is still better to be respectable than a minger/munter though, I know which I prefer.
I think some normally decent people reach a stage where they get fed, frustrated up with lies and nastiness from the 'usual forum riff raff trolls' and retaliate to some degree which paints a unreal picture of themselves.

I have never met one black person who was offended. They were dolls that were originally in the TV series Noddy
Anyway, heres a big member forum where the question was put to its black members:

Golliwogs were around long before Noddy Eds, the originals were based on 'blacked-up' minstrals, which in themselves became offensive.

As often as you've spewed your 'MY BLACK FRIENDS' don't object to such issues - diatribe; I've had to bite my tongue and make a serious attempt to prove what an absolute lame-brain you are!
Now, I'm just not feeling the need to 'bite my tongue' ...your willful racist POV regarding those RACISTS avatars is just beyond the whelm of logic and humanity/ethics and common sense.
But you are 'ENGLISH' so that seems to allow a certain profound superiority of behavior despite many other nations that have stepped up and changed the 'Little Black Sambo' ugly persona - the books - the skits - the movies - all of it!
Canada - circa 1950's >
And yes, they were banned from American book shelves as well >
My biracial - black friends, having seen those avatars are highly pissed that I'm even still a member of this racist community ...that's how incensed those avatars make an American Non-White human feel.
But carry on 'Alice in the Looking Glass', the ideology has a real immature charm to it, if it wasn't such a façade!

These brilliant forward thinking humans - banned all of the 'Little Black Sambo': books from their libraries and schools and pulled & banned those quaint little morning cartoons from their TV broadcasting shows. The terms ‘Black Sambo’ and ‘Sambo’ are generally considered by Negroes on this continent to be despicable, derogatory epithets in the same category as ‘darky’, ‘n*****’, ‘pick*****’, etc. A term that has the slightest suggestion of being odious to a particular ethnic group should not be sanctioned by officials in charge of public education. (I would suggest Board members read the works of Gunnar Myrdal, the Swedish sociologist, and E. Franklin Frazier, the American Negro sociologist, on the use of terms injurious to the welfare of Negroes.)….
The terms ‘Black Sambo’ and ‘Sambo’ have been and still are used by other children as a manner of addressing and teasing Negro children. This is dangerous, for it maximizes racial differences and tends to make a child feel that he does not wholly belong to the culture….
In these days of international tension and strife, it seems imperative that educators assume their proper responsibility in the area of human relations: to instill in Canada’s future citizens a real respect for the dignity of all human beings, regardless of nationality, race or religion. Stories such as Little Black Sambo can only detract from that effort.

So you're quaint/coy method of defending you NARROW/restricted POV regarding something that isn't viewed or acknowledged globally is ...well pretty F'd up and telling.THE CONTROVERSY
As popular as LBS seemed to be with librarians, as early as the late 1930s and early 1940s, black librarians were beginning to grumble about its suitability for black children’s image of themselves and how they were viewed by whites, in spite of the fact, as we have seen, that there was a dearth of literature for and about black children. Two prominent black children’s librarians, Charlemae Rollins at the Chicago Public Library and Augusta Baker, soon to become head of children’s services at New York Public Library raised several issues. Their concerns covered what they considered objectionable themes and the stereotyped illustrations and names of the characters.
The objectionable themes were the unsanitary use of butter taken from the ground by Black Jumbo after the tigers melt; over bright clothing showing that blacks have an indiscriminate and primitive love for bright colored clothes (red jacket, purple shoes with crimson soles and crimson linings, etc.); and the number of pancakes that Sambo consumed intimating that blacks have huge appetites.

Well it doesn't take away from the fact that most blacks people don't take offence. It's always the do-gooders that make the problems. It's like they don't want to let things go.
A couple friends of mine said their parents used to watch the Minstrel shows.
I fail to see how they're offensive actually? I mean it's a parody of someone's skin colour? It wasn't intended to hurt anyone until someone said "Oh look! We should be offended!!"
Btw, my friend had one when I was younger and neither of us realised they were supposed to be black people?

Right ...and in the whole global scope of the rest of the rational thinking adults vs the microscopic little community that you dwell in - the age of your social group - the social knowledge and basic education of your social group and that provides you with what exactly?eddie wrote:Well it doesn't take away from the fact that most blacks people don't take offence. Oh ...I know - I know, you just keep regurgitating the info; "well, my 2 black friends don't see anything wrong with those 'Sambo' images" and that is just good enough for you. Can't beat that logic - makes perfect sense to ...well you!

Re: Why Is Everyone on the Internet So Angry?
Gollywogs are still on sale here even though they are no longer a mainstream doll for most.
I had one when I was a kid, I never associated it with black people...it was just a soft doll.
However....obviously they DO cause upset nowadays, so for that reason alone I wouldn't buy one for any child, and I would also explain why they are now considered insulting to many.
Like the 'black and white minstrels' and the 'To death us do part' type of TV show that was once popular, they no longer are because times have changed and people are more aware.......personally I have no wish to go out of my way to upset anyone....whats the point?

Were we supposed to be offended by this stuff? We must have forgotten....

I had one too. He had luminous pants and dicky, and my mum confiscated him because of radium scares! I see them for sale here all the time, and nobody seems to bother. But...I wouldn't personally buy one.

These brilliant forward thinking humans - banned all of the 'Little Black Sambo': books from their libraries and schools and pulled & banned those quaint little morning cartoons from their TV broadcasting shows.

Hi Horatio
So apparantly this is a racist community based off I guess two avatar's?
Wow
So out of many posters, and even more insulting to Ben, this place is a racist community now?
When did that happen?
If anything, its certainly a mixture of views on here, but what an insult
Talk about insulting the owner of the forum and all the posters on here, as if now we all come to this place, "a racist community"
I mean this is newsfix, so being a memeber here would mean that newsfix, Ben's place is a racist community.
I mean if she is going on about antisemitism, well there is a couple of racists on the left that are, and too Far Right posters that are racists against Asians and Africans, but I think that is unfair to judge the whole forum based off these few number of racists on here, don't you agree horatio?
Frankly I fo not believe any claim sh is making about friends, i think they are in her imagination, as i bet the friends she has are only dolls.

Brad is a real bargain....only 3.99 AND he has bendy legs.
My favourite doll when I was a kid was made of pot...including her hair. She was called 'Nancy' (I named her) and all my friends wanted her because she was black....she stood out from the blue eyed blonde haired white dolls that everyone else had.

Re: Why Is Everyone on the Internet So Angry?
lol its a barbie doll
See talk about clueless
The problem is 4evercleuless, you called Ben's forum a racist community based on two posters avatars.
That is appalling and you have done that all by yourself
Many of us ignore their avatars knowing they are in bad taste because Ben and the mod team have allowed them.
So its funny you think a barabie doll is now racist and I knew you would be silly enough to even think it was by comparing to something that was racist.
Eddie was nearly right, because you certainly do not qualify as a do-gooder, but simply a regressive. Most on here deplore racism but you have cast now the whole place as a racist community and that just sums up what is wrong today with regressives full stop,
I have been fighting against racism for years and its people like you that are blind to racism on the left and only see racism in colour.
I suggest you stop further embarressing yourself 4everclueless

Lol this coming from the poster who daily teams up with one of the other Stygian Witches to abuse posters
i suggest you "put a sock in it" and get on with debating as many now are not going to tolerate your stirring anymore.

Nope....I am neither wanting to be in or out of any 'Pack'....and to be honest I don't even see this pack that you mention frequently.
I have noticed that you are quick to mention packs and gangs when someone takes an opposing stance to you and someone else agrees....that's not a pack, it's just one or more people not kissing your arse.

Amusing ...you 'CLAIM' to not be part of the "hyena pack" and yet you seem unable to respond to a answer that you asked and I did make a rejoinder and you did what the pack mentality does so well - get asinine and pissy!
Soooooo, it looks like as well as your selective choices in reading you're well versed in a 'Pack Mentality' ...must be comforting to know that you echo the pack and can't stand alone with a opinion!
Comforting or pathetic ...hmmm, pathetic I think!

Not sure how I can be part or not part of a 'hyena pack' that exists only in your head 4Ever.
Can I ask...seriously, do you really believe that everyone on this forum who gives you an answer you don't like is against you in some way? Are you paranoid in RL or do you just come over all vapourish when you log in?

Re: Why Is Everyone on the Internet So Angry?
Well, then ...you lack of comprehension and reading skills would qualify you for that 'Pack' ...it's quite the #1 thing that seems to feed their need to reply with such vile/angst/heinous insults!
Just as you've done ...so you'd not even have to pass their initiation process - *BINGO* you've qualified quite successfully!
But we've had this friendly little chat once before and you had that same narrow minded opinion back then too ...so if you feel the need to 'Kiss My Ass' - that's something I've yet to scratch off my bucket list.
Name - date - place and perhaps I could accommodate your need to fulfill that!

So I am also in this imaginary pack you talk about so often.....thanks for letting me know my place.
Not sure I can often summon up the interest to answer you with the suitably fitting vile and heinous insults you expect, but I will do my best if I am in a REALLY bad mood....don't hold your breath though.
As for ass kissing, sorry, I don't do that, will a friendly cyber wave do?
