Meet Colossus.



He’s big, he’s angry and he’s the largest ever male funnel web spider to be handed into the Australian Reptile Park.

Colossus was found on the Central Coast, north of Sydney, and was dropped off at the park to participate in the much needed venom collection program.

The spider got his name from his massive size and his temper with his fangs constantly dripping with venom.

Liz Gabriel, Head Curator at the Australian Reptile Park, said the beginning of the year is peak time for funnel webs to be out and about and the recent wet weather is particularly favourable.

“The males are wandering around trying to find females to mate with.”

The Australian reptile park has an extensive venom milking program, which then gets made into anti-venom.

“We really encourage local communities to hand them into the Australian Reptile Park or to our participating drop-off points within this peak season,” Ms Gabriel said.

The sole purpose of the venom program is to protect humans from bites.

Ms Gabriel said funnels webs are generally feisty and can reach 35mm in body length for females and 25mm for males.
