You see we are in the open. I am staring a petition to have it broadcast on every channel.

Why do you want a bigger and bigger underclass??? A pal of mine who is a Maths Teacher and not a lefty thinks its because you lot reckon they will vote for you. Filling the stys with Labour voters.

I reckon that is flawed thinking if they can't be arsed to work why should they vote. When the money runs out Scatman I doubt you will be lauding the underclass with qite as much vigour.

Have you seen the state of that street, before the filming?

Shocking.

They are now complaining that the TV company bribed them, with tins of lager, McDonalds and fags.

You are right Phil. We go back a long way and I know you have seen it all before and some of it has been disgusting even involving your partner and your family. But you're still here holding your nerve under extreme provocation which is a credit to you.

Keep it up.

At least when you lose your temper there is a reason for it Phil. Drinky on the other hand is just a nasty vindictive frustrated old man, trying to pretend to be a class act and failing miserably. In fact, tonight he has really let himself down, not that he was very high in the first place.

He certainly does like to target his abuse, i think he's trying to sew discord here, things have been very reasonable here over the last couple of weeks or so.  Sad

Just found out about it.

I thought I might try a few lines I don't post a lot anymore I got bored with it.

I realised its essentially pointless. For example in an argument normally if you van provide compelling evidence that a+ a and not b then you normally move the other person proposing its b.

On here if the Labour Party were to say Paedophilia is great and we should be defending paedophiles you guys would be doing so all day.

It doesn't matter what's right or wrong to you guys if Labours says it's right it's right.

The Benefits Street uproar shows it's now virtually a crime to criticise the welfare state Empty Iain Duncan Smith suggests hit show Benefits Street justifies savage welfare cuts

Post by Guest Tue Jan 14, 2014 2:02 am

Welfare abuse exposed by Channel Four’s hit show Benefits Street justifies the government’s savage benefit cuts, Iain Duncan Smith suggested today.

The Work and Pensions Secretary said the documentary starring benefit claimants ripping off the system had “shocked” the public.

And he also revealed that the controversial cap on the amount families can claim in benefits could be slashed by thousands of pounds.

Mr Duncan Smith said the Government’s £26,000 a year limit was “under review”.

Benefits Street, which is currently being broadcast on Channel 4, focuses on the lives of hard-up families on James Turner Street, in Winson Green, Birmingham.

It has sparked anger after focusing on those who spend their benefit money on cigarettes and wide-screen TVs.

The programme has been slammed as “poverty porn” by critics.

But speaking in the Commons today, Mr Duncan Smith said: “Many people are shocked by what they see.”

He added: “The reality is that is why the public backs our welfare reform package, to get more people back to work, to end these abuses.”

His comments were made in response to Tory MP Philip Davies.

The Shipley MP asked: “Have you managed to watch programmes like Benefits Street and On Benefits and Proud?

“If so, have you, like me, been struck by the number of people on there who manage to combine complaining about welfare reforms whilst being able to afford being able to buy copious amounts of cigarettes, have lots of tattoos done, watch Sky TV on the obligatory wide-screen television?”

“Do you understand the concerns and irritations of many of the people who go out to work every day, pay their taxes, who cannot afford those kinds of luxuries themselves?”

Mr Duncan Smith replied that Mr Davies’ assessment was “right”.

He said: “All of these abuses date back to what the last Government left, which was massive spending and trapping people in a benefit dependency.”

Justification: Iain Duncan Smith

Benefits Street has been billed by the programme’s makers as showing life on “one of Britain’s most benefit-dependent streets”.

But anti-poverty campaigners led by the Church of England charity, the Children’s Society, said the programme “damaging and grossly unbalanced”.

Channel 4 and TV watchdog Ofcom have already received hundreds of complaints.

Yesterday, Richard McKerrow, the boss of TV company Love Productions, defended his programme.

He insisted it was not about “demonising the poor”, adding: “It’s a very honest and true portrayal of life in Britain and people are frightened of it.”

Mr Duncan Smith’s revelation about changes to the benefit cap comes amid increasing speculation that the Tories could promise to lower it after the next election.

The cap is currently set at the average wage in Britain - but critics point out this does not take into account the tax paid by those in work.

To take home £26,000 a year after tax, workers would have to earn around £35,000.

There has been growing speculation, fuelled by Chancellor George Osborne, that the Tories could lower the cap to £20,000 a year - which is around the average earnings after tax.

Mr Duncan Smith accepted the proposal was under consideration after he was quizzed by Tory MP Andrew Bridgen in the Commons.

Mr Bridgen said most of his constituents in North West Leicestershire took home less than £26,000 a year.

He said they were astonished more than 30,000 households had been claiming over the current cap level before it was imposed.

Mr Duncan Smith said: “73% of the public support the cap as it stands, nine out of 10 Londoners in a recent poll supported the cap. The only people who don’t support the cap are the Labour opposition.

“We will keep the policy under review but the one thing we should celebrate is we are reforming welfare to ensure those who need the money get it, and those who don’t make sure they go back to work.”

A source from the Department and Work and Pensions admitted lowering the cap was being debated.

She said: “It’s something that is under discussion.

“The Chancellor has spoken about it a lot more than Iain has, but it’s not something that Iain is actively calling for.”

Labour would not comment on the remarks.
