HOW FAR SHOULD THE CIA GO TO PROTECT AMERICA?
I've not had much else stir my blood to a boiling point - raise the hair on the back of my neck - or make me want to throttle Condoleezza Rice so thoroughly and effective until she was not moving! But watching this has put me there and it's only ½ way through the broadcast!
Please if you watch nothing else ...spend some time watching what was going down behind the scenes before 9-11.

HOW FAR SHOULD THE CIA GO TO PROTECT AMERICA?
"48 HOURS PRESENTS" The Broadcast Network Premiere of
"THE SPYMASTERS - CIA IN THE CROSSHAIRS" Saturday, May 21 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT)
What are the rules in the war on terror for America's spymasters?
Will the next president bring back waterboarding as an "enhanced interrogation technique?"
CIA through the eyes of all 12 living directors of the agency.
The directors talk openly about tough calls they've had to make, the controversies they have faced and what it takes to be a master spy. "I found that I was making decisions on life and death as a director," former CIA Director Leon Panetta says, "And those decisions are never easy, and, frankly, shouldn't be easy." In emotional, no-holds, barred interviews, the directors and their top operatives open up about the role of the agency, the impact being inside has had on their lives, their failures and successes, and their own internal battles and heart-wrenching moments over what's right and wrong in protecting America's citizens.
The documentary raises key questions such as how far should America go to prevent another terrorist attack? What is fair game in an unfair fight? And has the agency focused too much on lethal paramilitary action at the expense of gathering intelligence. "The Spymasters" also gets inside the events leading up to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the hunt for Osama bin Laden. "I don't think you can go through that kind of experience, of having to make life and death decisions.
Having to every day, read intelligence about all of the evil that's out there in the world and those who want to strike at us, and not have it affect you," Panetta says. The directors also look to the future and what the CIA, and the country, face in terms of fighting terrorism. "You can't kill your way out of this," says George Tenet. "That's a mistake. It's much more complicated."

Well, if you'd watched the 48 Hours special - you'd have a great appreciation for why the NSA was founded and the 'good-ole'-boy' mentality between the CIA vs FBI and their ego's let a lot of info fall between the cracks that should have been shoved under GWB's nose.
Hell, even POTUS Bill Clinton had been dealing with the Al Qaida threat in Africa and the spies were busy telling his Security Council that is was a wide spread pervasive terrorist group & growing rapidly!

I know, I don't know enough about the CIA today. But my comment was on that general level. I know enough to understand that the NSA is not a substitute to the CIA.
The NSA is over there, doing a different thing. The NSA is the omnipresent listener, penetrating the deepest parts of your underwear, in your bedroom, under the covers, watching you as you pee, crap and masturbate.
Now which is more insidious. The operative CIA, accomplishing a single--if odious-- task? Or the NSA, and the absolute death of privacy?

Well, that was pretty insightful and descriptive for these former large & in charge directors to explain how far the CIA has changed their main objectives during the Clinton era and right into the GWB debacle.
Just makes me wonder how far back into those POTUS #41 years all those terrorists were practicing on their hijacking skills when we were just ignoring their lame attempts as their education just kept getting better?

Always remember, George H. W. Bush was formerly the Director of the CIA. He was the author of many of the most devious designs of the agency.
Ask sometime about the C-124s running in and out of the airport in Mena, Arkansas. going to Ilopango AFB, in Ilopango El Salvador, carrying munitions from Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio destined for Nicarauga, and returning with mj and cocaine destined for the inner-cities of America.
And maybe someone thought Putin was bad because he directed the KGB.

I don't think the CIA does much to protect America at all -- if you look at its history, it seems more dedicated to suppressing socialism than anything else.

And ole' #41 would have had the wherewithal to give the CIA full card blanche during his term in office - no doubt in my mind; sending #41 a memo just to keep him advised of any situation would have been SOP
