Vegetarians and vegans boycott Gourmet Burger Kitchen over ‘antagonising’ ad campaign
First topic message reminder :
The campaign featured taglines such as ‘Vegetarians, resistance is futile’
One of Gourmet Burger Kitchen's adverts on the Tube Twitter/Adam Libonatti-Roche
A burger chain has said it will remove some adverts after being accused of "mocking" vegetarians in its latest advertising campaign.
Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK) has come under fire for a series of advertisements which vegans and vegetarians have branded "disgraceful".
The adverts, seen mostly at London Underground stations and trains, include taglines such as “Vegetarians, resistance is futile.
One of the adverts has the picture of a cow, with the tagline: “They eat grass so you don’t have to”.
People have taken to social media to condemn GBK’s ads, coining the hashtag #gourmetmurderkitchen to highlight what has been perceived to be a flippant attitude towards the consumption of meat.
Complaints have also been made to the Advertising Standards Authority.
GBK responded to the flood of complaints on Monday, confirming they will be taking down ”some” of the adverts.
In a statement posted on their Facebook page, GBK said: “We’ve been reading the reaction to our latest advertising campaign and needless to say, we’re quite taken aback. “Our intentions were light-hearted and not meant to cause any offence, but clearly we have, and for that we apologise. “Having read all your comments and messages, we’ve made the decision to take down some of the adverts.”

It seems veganism on the rise when marketing takes a pathetically desperate turn for the crass #goodluckwiththat #gourmetmurderkitchen

You have also reinforced the stigma behind vegan diets, poked fun at animal suffering and pissed your customers off. #gourmetmurderkitchen

It was you. I replied to eddie, and you replied to me and started talking about starving people. Then you didn't like what I said, so you posted that picture of an empty room.
It's hypocritical of you to call me "stupid" really. If you can't be civil, don't bother me any more.

Meat eaters who say they wouldn't eat cats, dogs, or horses would also probably turn into hypocrites if they were starving.
This is not about starving people, it's about people objecting to an advert which uses them in order to sell something they don't approve of.
If the company had used an advert for pork which said "Muslims - resistance is futile", I bet there would have been a lot more complaints.

Neither does being a meat eater or a person who makes burgers.
This isn't about a legal issue, it's about people complaining to a company, and the company then has to decide if they want to carry on offending those people or not.

You don't eat meat because you don't like it though. If you didn't eat it on ethical grounds, you would probably have a different opinion.

only in the greatest need..
cats and dogs are predators, and therfor not good or safe eating...
we dont have rabbits, and the hens make eggs so......
plus, in a survival situation you would need to weigh up the value of dogs for security and hunting
and the cats as rodent patrol, (since the number of rats would likely rocket)

I don't really get why people are talking about surviving. This is about an advert where nobody is starving. Some people wanted to know why some vegetarians would find it offensive, and I explained.

Because it is interesting to understand what it would be like
I remember my father recounting many stories of what it was like during the Siege of Malta during World War 2, where they were starving and remember teaching me a lesson once where I turned my nose up at a meal of liver and cabbage and would not eat it on a Friday evening. So he let me stay there sitting there for a few hours and when it came to be time he sent me to bed. The next morning when everyone was having scrambled eggs for breakfast, i was instead given the same meal and you can imagined I complained bitterly but he would not budge keeping me sat there, as I was just being picky and pedantic over the meal. Put it this way by the Sunday, my fickleness had altogether vanished due to the fact I was that hungry I wolfed down that same dinner he had kept for me. When you are hungry any reservations you had over something go out of the window. Though he certainly respected my elder sister being a vegetarian mind,

Re: Vegetarians and vegans boycott Gourmet Burger Kitchen over ‘antagonising’ ad campaign
I love horse meat myself and its far healthier than beef,
Its a telling point Rags makes, because people will be aghast at eating one kind of meat and then not have an issue over another shows how as meat eaters we do generally tend to show double standards. I never would have eaten Horse meat for these reasons before if I had known I was eating this in France years ago, but after I had eaten horse meat. My objections went out of the window as I seriously enjoyed eating horse meat. Its more how we look and perceive an animal to where our objections lie within and its mainly of the association that animal has to humans with sentimental attachment, why people would more likely object.

I think that is a fair point, what is advertised for sale should be what is actually sold to the customer.
I don't even think horse meat deserves to be on the wierd list of meats. it's basically a cow-deer with out horns
