The first is true, but what can you do when it's a straight-forward, nominal value choice?
The second is not as true, as you are really saying that the competition for the food is adverse to animals. Competition for something that is absolutely necessary for life, is understandable--neither good nor bad--but understandable.
Competition is only problematical when there is a limitation on resources. If all is plentiful, there is no problem. Therefore, the answer is to increase the supply of the resource, and relieve the limitation. Increase plant life and decrease the pressure of competition.

It is a good thread. Trouble is, it's one of those issues that is over in a few exchanges. Your reasoning is that tight.
