Britain's dog population in danger from killer parasite spread by foxes
Foxes are helping to spread a potentially fatal parasite that is threatening Britain's dog population, researchers have warned.
Up to 50 per cent of foxes are infected with lungworm, whose larvae can be found in the bodies and slime of slugs and snails.
Once swallowed by a dog, the parasite travels through its body to end up in the heart causing sickness and possibly death.
A study by University of Bristol scientists found that lungworm was now present in more than one in 10 foxes (18.3 per cent) in the UK.
The worm's prevalence was significantly higher than it was in 2008, when an earlier study showed 7.3 per cent of foxes to be infected.

Re: Britain's dog population in danger from killer parasite spread by foxes
Sorry, but this is a ludicrous statement by the Torygraph, and obviously meant to frighten dog owners to get them in the frame of mind to allow fox hunting again. It has always been known the slugs and snails pass on lug worm to dogs and dog owners have been warned about it by vets as long as I can remember.
This from back in 2010:
A rise in the number of slugs and snails could prove fatal to dogs if they eat them, vets are warning.
The warmer but wetter weather is perfect for the molluscs, which can harbour the parasite lungworm.
Although dogs do not eat slugs or snails on purpose, they may ingest them accidentally if they fall into their bowls or attach onto bones or toys.

Has bugger all to do with foxes.

I suggest you read again..
Up to 50 per cent of foxes are infected with lungworm, whose larvae can be found in the bodies and slime of slugs and snails.
Once swallowed by a dog, the parasite travels through its body to end up in the heart causing sickness and possibly death.
Further research has confirmed that lungworm can be transmitted to dogs that lick the slime trails left by slugs, not only by accidentally swallowing slugs and snails. The parasite's larvae are excreted in dog faeces.

So? That advice has been given to dog owners for at least 30 years to my knowledge. The carriers are the snails, and of course as part of the dog family, foxes will also be infected the same way. But the foxes don't pass it on to dogs, the foxes get infected by snails exactly the same way dogs do.

Re: Britain's dog population in danger from killer parasite spread by foxes
Its because the Foxes are spreading the parasite.
Foxes can also become infected, and the increase in urban fox populations might be a reason for the spread of the parasite across the country.

Sorry Didge, but that is total rubbish. Slugs and snails have always carried lugworm, dog owners have always been warned about it. Foxes can't spread something that slugs and snails have always carried all over the country. As we found a slug in our little bit that is attached to the kitchen and where we feed the dog, OH and I were actually talking about them the other night, and he can remembers his father, who was a gamekeeper, warning him about it when he was given his first puppy over 40 years ago. And that was in the Highlands of Scotland.

Again if 50% of foxes are infected this is increasing the parasite being spread throughout the country.
This is thus increasing the chances for dogs to be infected.
Its basic maths calculated on risk.
As seen that risk is increased in the parasite gains hold in many areas.
So again foxes are playing an instrumental part in spreading the problem through their faeces

Re: Britain's dog population in danger from killer parasite spread by foxes
It can't increase something that is already 100%.
A recent survey1 suggests Angiostrongylus vasorum is now endemic throughout much of the UK.
http://www.lungworm.co.uk/learn-about-lungworm/
The lungworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) is a parasite that can cause serious health problems in dogs and can even be fatal if not diagnosed and treated.
Slugs and snails carry the lungworm larvae, and dogs can become infected when they accidentally (or purposefully) eat these common garden pests whilst rummaging through undergrowth, eating grass, drinking from puddles or outdoor water bowls, or pick them up from their toys.A recent survey1 suggests Angiostrongylus vasorum is now endemic throughout much of the UK.

Dear me you really cannot grasp how something is made to spead easier of which is being done by the fact many foxes are infected.
So to say it has nothing to do with foxes is in complete error.
They are spreading the parasite by the fact far more are infected and it is being spread by their faeces.
Lets see what Victor or Nicko have to say on the matter.

Re: Britain's dog population in danger from killer parasite spread by foxes
And you can't grasp that as just about every snail and slug already carries it, it's impossible for foxes to spread it. You're not a dog owner are you? If you were, you would know that every time a new puppy or dog is taken to the vet there are notices in the vets about it and a good vet will always tell a new owner about it when they are doing the dogs first health check. I've kept dogs for all of my life from a tiny child, and was brought up knowing how to do the best for them and what to look out for, and one of those things has always been slugs and snails. BTW, they don't taste nice to dogs, so they are very unlikely to eat them, the trails are the worst thing if they leave a ball outside or if a water bowl is left outside and not cleaned.

It's the nature of foxes to kill to eat just the same as dogs cats any wild animal will kill to eat .

I do not think so, that is not out of necessity to eat.

foxes still need the population controlling, they seem to be getting more and more daring as to how far they will stray especially in to more urban areas..
They can be controlled, as I said, without the hooray henry's in their red death garbs, ridiculous horses and even more ridiculous dogs....

Can I point out Nicko, that this subject has absolutely nothing to do with whether we think foxes are cuddly and cute, but it is about the fact that the Torygraph are putting out extremely old news as if it is something new, and foxes can't spread something that was acknowedge years ago as being endemic to the whole of the UK.
