Gay couple [claim] abused by Tesco cashier / (skin colour from page nine)
First topic message reminder :
A gay couple were subjected to a torrent of abuse in a London branch of Tesco after they shared a brief kiss in the store. Steve Luetchford, 28, was shopping with his 25-year-old partner Mattia Pievani at a Tesco branch in Brixton on Friday evening when, they claim, a female cashier verbally abused them. The woman is alleged to have said that the couple should be "ashamed" after she witnessed their intimate moment. When they challenged the woman on her views she continued to insult them, it is claimed.
They then requested that two other staff members refer them to the store manager so that they could lodge a complaint.

That you and Nems focus on anything but actual homophobia- that isn't saying you are homophobic. I can't remember exact occasions but I do know this isn't the only time this has happened.
To turn that round, you can't focus on anything other than homophobia. Sometimes Les, it's just people being people. There is enough to be offended about in this world, why waste your energy on a couple of wannabees who are clearly enjoying every moment in the spotlight.

Unbelieveable, a hetrosexual who has never or would ever face such discrmination trying to tell someone who is homosexual and has suffered discrmination, that they focus on something that effects manyt homosexuals.
One word to describe the above:
Disgusting

What about the other staff who allegedly wouldn't do anything or hand over their names? The guy apparently wants them to get more than a slap on the wrist too.

Urgh, when I was complaining on Facebook about Cecil the Lion last week I had someone tell me that we shouldn't be getting upset about a lion being killed when people die everyday.
News flash. We can be upset, offended, annoyed etc by more than one thing at a time.
And this thread is about gay people Nems, so of course I am going to focus on the homophobia- are you that simple minded? I don't talk about gay people when I'm threads on other subjects.
Why should I care here? Because it could have been me in that situation, and I'd have been pissed off too- I'd probably have posted on Facebook, after giving the stupid woman some words in return and speaking to the manager.

No your views were a complete insult, because you have no comprehension how it effects many homosexuals.

So none of the other staff were shocked then - by the guy's own admission. I find it hard to believe that they wouldn't be if the lady had shouted in the manner they claimed.
Like I said, they're exaggerating IMO.

leave the insults after being very pathetic saying beating up a stranger and copper was disgusting.
Yes we saw you were trying to stir again basically calling me disgusting for losing my rag at my nephew getting hit on the head with a chair.
The fact is you just insulted Eilzel with your pathetic and unsympathetic views, where again David would no doubt be appalled at

You come on a thread (which I didn't post) about gay people being abused and then claim I am always focusing on homophobia.
I don't want to be insulting, but it is a pretty inane thing to say. What do you want me to focus on on this story?

See you want to stir it up.

The worst thing was the ITV report on the alleged incident. They didn't bother to even check it out before they went around asking random people what they thought about it.

So you further insult Eilzel claiming he is now hiding behind me when he has made his own views.
That again is pathetic on your part because he rightly stated your views were simpleminded

I didn't see him accusing you of that, but then I'm only reading replies to me tbf- I don't think didge saying that to you is really a good reason for you to say the same to me though
And I don't normally like people speaking my views for me (smelly bandit was good at trying that, badly). Didge may be a little OTT in saying you are insulting me- but then if I had complained about the same on social media and somebody accused me of attention seeking or lying then I would be insulted.
I'd say I'm more appalled at people attacking the guys and saying nothing at what is alleged to have been said.

You all have a point to be fair.
As I said earlier, two people can read the same story and see two different perspectives, just because nems and rags focused (rightly or wrongly) on the social media aspect of the story doesn't mean they aren't necessarily sympathetic to the two men involved.

It has certainly attracted a lot of media attention - it was even on the tele
People are just speculating based on limited information and it would be best to wait until Tesco complete their invetigation and make a statement.
Something similar happened earlier this year when a Tesco checkout operator abused a pregnant Lesbian shopper by stating that people like her should not have children. Tesco investigated the case and stated that the operator had been disciplined but they didn't say what that involved.
Wait and see what happens I guess.

Just want to point out that true equality doesn't exist until people from all groups get to be jerks just like everyone else ... not to say I know anything about this story. But neither being part of mainstream society nor part of a minority means you're immune from common human assholery.

Yep! Maybe someday we'll be able to dislike one another without regard for the groups we come from ... can't we all just not get along?

I have said it before (on here I think) that I cant wait for the day when we don't have to label every one and can be treated the same. The longer the differences are pointed out the longer the bigots will have the floor.

Re: Gay couple [claim] abused by Tesco cashier / (skin colour from page nine)
Re what Ben and Nems said, was this story all over the press because the couple are gay or because a cashier was allegedly rude to a customer? If every incident where a cashier was rude to customer was all over the press, there would be no room for anything else. If there was a story every time a customer was rude to a cashier, it would be even worse!
Where did the press get the story from anyway? Did the couple go to the press, or did whoever first reported it happen to be looking at the Twitter or Facebook accounts of these guys?

It was not just a case of being rude but an often everyday occurance that group constantly suffers with discrmination.
You seem to fail to understand you do not deal with such situations by brushing them under the carpet but tackling them head on.
If a company like Tesco's fails to address a complain which is very much homophobic, then we are failing those who suffer discrmination.
Your fixation with attention and the press misses the whole point here if the claim is true on how we need to tackle discrmination.

Generally speaking, all Tesco can do is tell cashiers that they're entitled to their feelings and opinions, just don't express those opinions out loud.
What if the incident had involved a cashier saying someone should tell their kids to stop screeching or something? Would that have been splashed all over the press?
Having asked that question, I fear the answer might be "yes". This is what's getting on my nerves these days - the stupid news stories involving ordinary people like cashiers or schoolteachers. You know the sort of thing - someone's kid gets told off at school for wearing the wrong shoes, and the story is all over the press.

Good point -- please, oh please, don't worry about what the press has to say about pretty much anything -- we poor horse-shoers are just trying to survive Twitter and Facebook. It's all a game of "look at me!" because whoever gets looked at gets advertising money. (That's true even for your BBC; why else do you think I can watch BBC programs in the Dallas-Fort Worth Sweatroplex?)

That is true, today's media is great at making much out of nothing.

Wht if, what if, has no relevance.
What has relevance is that a complaint of homophobia was placed against a memeber of staff of Tesco.
If true then Tesco needs to be doing something about it.
If they are lying then the two of them have made a mockery of homophobia and would hope everyone rightly condemn them.
That is all that is relevant here

Why is homophobia more important than any other kind of phobia, or whatever you want to call it?

It's not as if the woman refused to serve them, or marched them out the door or anything. If she did shout like that (which I doubt anyway), she expressed an opinion she shouldn't have expressed out loud. You could say that about a lot of opinions really.
