Did North Carolina Issue the First Declaration of Independence?
On May 20, 1775, a group of colonial militia leaders met in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and declared independence from Great Britain a full 13 months before the Continental Congress. No original document survives, and many—Thomas Jefferson included—claimed it never existed. Two hundred forty years after it was supposedly signed, take a look back at the contentious legacy of what some still consider the first Declaration of Independence.
