Anti-Muslim Hitler Ads On Buses Spark Outrage

The controversial ads on Philadelphia buses - by a pro-Israel group - show the Nazi dictator and an Arab leader in a 1941 image.



Controversial ads showing a photograph of Adolf Hitler with a former Arab leader have started appearing on Philadelphia transit buses.

The ads on Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) buses bear the tagline: "Jew Hatred: It's in the Quran."

They feature a 1941 photograph of Hitler and supporter Hajj Amin al-Husseini, a Palestinian Arab nationalist and include an appeal to "end all aid to Islamic countries".

The ads from the pro-Israel American Freedom Defense Initiative will appear on 84 buses over the course of April.

A federal judge last month ordered SEPTA to accept the ads as freedom of speech.

"SEPTA does not - and I repeat - does not endorse or support the views expressed in these ads," board chair Pat Deon said in a statement.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter attended a rally against the ads earlier in the week, and religious leaders encouraged unity and peaceful protest.

Some bus riders on Thursday expressed outrage at the ads, branding them "racist" and "terrible".

The Interfaith Center of Greater Philadelphia says it will run its own "Dare to Understand" ad campaign that promotes mutual understanding, respect and tolerance.

I very much doubt that the judge would have ordered them to accept ads that involved what Israel has done in Gaza.

The Rhetoric in the poster is disgusting, as it bases a view to incite hatred against Muslims, based off the Quran (which it does mind have hatred towards Jews in the context of the time) and the Grand Mufti who was also an ally to Hitler. However Sassy, this is exactly what you do when you make outrageous claims to Israel on a par with the Nazi's, claims to a Palestinian holocaust, ISIS, Apartheid etc.
So I am glad you brought this up and even if they are pro Israel this group, does not mean all Jews are culpable or responsible for this far right outrageous discrimination. You see two points are correct on the poster, the Grand Mufti and hatred directed at Jews. Where it crosses over to the worst discrimination is where it is making all Muslims culpable because they read the Quran and take it as the word of their deity, neglecting that the hate was directed at certain Jews groups at the time of Muhammad. Sadly many etremists use these verses in the bible and Qumran to justify hate to different social and ethnic groups of people and thus the poster should have targeted Islamic extremist groups or ideologies like Wahhabism and not Muslims per say. Again we see a call to boycott all Islamic countries, which again is discrimination and making many innocent Muslims suffer off how Muslims extremists spread hate.

So are you starting to see the picture of when you do exactly the same with Israel?

Which is why such groups are incitement to hatred against others, not caring for what they promote or what effect it has on many Muslims. Just is the same when the likes of the BDS claim a Palestinian Holocaust, or Apartheid, comparisons to the Nazi's and ISIS, insulting all the victims that suffered under and still do with these groups in history.
So this is a fine example of  a group, with as much hate as the BDS, who do deny the Israeli Jews self determination by lying, inventing and  distorting history in the attempt to deligitimize and dehumanize Israel and its people. This is what this far right group is doing here. They are attempting to dehumanise and deligitimize Muslims.

Yes. It's crazy that a judge said they had to accept freedom of speech, whilst taking away their right to decide for themselves what they want on their buses.

Freedom of speech is one thing but here this is clearly hate speech in my opinion, though how it is worded would be interesting to have Quill give his legal expertise in regards to US law on this and rights around posters on things like Buses etc.

Note how the message is in the right-hand portion, and the graphic is in the left?  They are avoiding actually mentioning the likeness to Hitler at all.  That way they avoid civil liability should anyone step forward and give a credible case for standing.

The message is basically that those who read and follow the Quran hate Jews.  Or, more simply put, Muslims hate Jews.  It is just another ugly, racist viewpoint.  Since it occurs in the US, it is protected as political speech under the First Amendment of the US Constitution...the courts won't touch it.

Basically, we've sussed it out.  Under the theory of the First Amendment, proponents argue, the people can figure out for themselves if it is valid, or if it is racist.  But it is political speech, and in an open society, democracy, everything gets to be heard.

As an active board member of a public transit company, I (we) deal with this all the time.  Yep, the courts say, if you are going to offer space on buses for public messages, they have to respect the laws of freedom of speech.

Oh, I think we all are well aware that there is anti-semitism among Muslims. There was before WWI. There was a much stronger sentiment among Christians, and that narrative figures into WWII, Hitler and Goebbels.

The point is that anti-semitism bears no necessary connection to either Islam or Christianity. It is separate.
