George Osborne: Ed Miliband's cost of living election pitch has been 'demolished'
The Institute for Fiscal Studies says people will be better off next year in milestone hailed by George Osborne as a 'significant milestone'
Families will be better off next year than when the Coalition came into power, a respected economic forecaster said yesterday undermining Labour's election pitch on living standards.
The Institute for Fiscal Studies said that average household incomes will next year be higher than they were in 2010 in a milestone hailed by George Osborne as a "very significant moment".
It came as Ed Balls, the shadow said that under a Labour government the nation's debt as a share of the economy will only fall "by the end" of the next Parliament.
His comments raised the prospect that a future Labour government will borrow more or raise taxes to ease the impact of austerity measures on government spending.
The IFS suggested that Labour will spend £23billion more than the Conservatives over the course of the next Parliament because they are prepared to "borrow to invest".
