The Imitation Game Empty The Imitation Game

Post by Cass Sun Jan 04, 2015 12:15 am

Go.See.It.Now.

one of the best films I've seen in a long while. Benedict Cumberbatch was outstanding. if he doesn't get an Oscar something is seriously wrong. Keira Knightly was surprisingly good.

I firmly believe that we all wouldn't be here on this forum without Alan Turing.

Mr. C enjoyed this so much better than Into The Woods which I had no idea was a musical.

From what I've read, Turing did indeed stand on the shoulders of some great mathematicians from another country whose role in defeating the Nazis is rarely acknowledged ...

I don't think he stood on their shoulders as more along side them. Even his second in command Hugh Alexander recognised his superior genius. Joan's contribution was recognised as well as she was deputy head.

this article is a good follow up on all of Turing's associates in Hut 8.

this is a fairly good article on enigma and you may want to read up on Ultra as well

yes Nicko. we are all aware that that film was very bad history.

For those unaware it was sailors from HMS Bulldog who boarded an apparently empty U-110 in May 1941 (before the USA had "officially " entered the war) in the North Atlantic and found another more updated Enigma machine in the wireless room. This was sent to Bletchley were an older captured german version was as well as one that had been developed by the Poles - who also incidentally had made great strides in trying to crack Enigma but hadn't been successful. Without their work, it would've taken Turing and his team a lot longer to finally crack it.

eds brilliant film. as a non maths non science person I enjoyed it tremendoudyand cried buckets. of course Mr. C and I being the only Brits in the audience could be heard laughing out loud at the underlying humour.

read the link and just google it. He was a genius and his Turing machines are considetedrby many to be the forerunners of computers. most also give him title of father ow AI (Artificial intelligence)

Didge haven't seen Fury - I dunno something about it didn't grab me. Maybe when it I get it on DVD for the library.

I admit to being worn out by war movies as to me nothing can ever top SPR. for WW2 (although Downfall was great on Hitler).

Was very disappointed to be honest as am a war film buff. Well love all films, more so this one here as it recalls the life of somebody who was a genius that helped shaped the war in our favour.
I love films best that keep you guessing all the way through.
Quite interested in religious type films, though I must admit Noah, was weird, though powerful at the same time, worth watching.
Downfall was brilliant and as good as Das boot and Stalingrad.
The best two war films, to me are Warhorse and The Brotherhood of War, both very moving, though am sure this will top them both.

warhorse was good - when I could understand it through my sobbing.
never saw Brotherhood of war. should I?
Noah is still out constantly on loan. Exodus is supposedly much better than Noah.

side note - again - saw film trailer for new Helen Mirren film Woman in Gold based on true story of a Nazi stolen Gustav Klimt picture. Looks VERY up my street.

Watched Exodus the other day, again not over the moon about it to be honest, interesting aspect of a messenger of god and of course Christian Bale is good, but maybe I need to watch on the big screen and then give my view.
Brotherhood of war is a foreign film about the Korean war in regards to two brothers, quite bloody, but a very moving tale, based on a true story.
As I say Noah was good and Russel Crowe was very good I thought as well as Ray Winstone, but it is quite dark film, not in light, well you know what I mean.

Fair point Nicko, the action is very realistic and for that it is very good value to watch, just the story line was poor to me, though Tom Hanks was quite excellent.
It was because of this they made Band of Brothers, which was also excellent.

I thought Band of Brothers was excellent, never missed it.I liked the bit where they welded "steel forks" to the front of tanks to break through hedges to get at the Germans. The "Bocage" held up the advance for weeks as the soldiers could not get through it without being picked off by German Snipers or "Stonked" by mortars.

It was an excellent series Nicko, though I did not think Pacific was as good. I think though the best BOB episode had to be either the Battle around Carentan or the one on Bastogne.
What was yours Nicko?
Read a book around the battle of the Bocage centered around the 12th Waffen SS division Hitlerjugend, quite fanatical and gave the Brits and Canadians a very hard time of it.

I did not realise that Lone Wolf, that he had this in the making whilst making Private Ryan, interesting.

I have read many books about WW2, One that stood out was Enemy At the Gates, about the defence of Stalingrad. There were many more, too many to remember. I also read many about the Irish troubles. I had many reasons to hate the IRA, another war where many good Soldiers died. If you have a few minutes to spare go to Google Music and find "A British Soldiers Song" a sergeant in the Para's died there.

The film is not bad either for Enemy at the Gates Nicko, have you watched?
I have good reason to hate the IRA, I lost two uncles in the RUC to the IRA as well as other reasons which not going to go into at this moment.
Interesting with the song will have a look. Thanks

I posted across the water about a new film about this Nicko:

Sounds weird though will give it a try, as I do like weird films.

Have you ever watched Pans Labyrinth?

It is foreign and very dark but is excellent film I would recommend.
