Nigel Farage Defends Use Of Words 'Chinky' And 'Poofter'
Nigel Farage has defended the use of the word "chinky", after a Ukip parliamentary candidate was forced to quit for using the term to describe a Chinese woman.
Ukip's candidate for the Basildon South, Kerry Smith stood down from the position earlier this week after a phone conversation he had was leaked to the Daily Mail. In the call he referred to a Chinese woman as "chinky" and gay Ukip members as "disgusting poofters".
Speaking on LBC radio this morning, Farage said Smith was "not suitable" to be an MP, but accused his critics of being snobbish.
“I'm a bit sad, because Kerry Smith is a rough diamond. He's a council house boy from the East End of London, left school early and talks and speaks in a way that a lot of people from that background do.
"I feel a bit sorry for Kerry Smith, because I think he's a genuine fellow."
Farage said "a lot of people" would use the word "chinky" to describe a Chinese meal. "If you and your mates are going out for a Chinese, what do you say you’re going for?" he asked the presenter.
And asked if he would himself say he was "going for a Chinky", Mr Farage replied: "No, but a lot of people would. I don't think I've ever used that word."

I am sure people do use the word "chinky", it does not mean it is acceptable when the term is derogatory.
Blimey so what next the Bavarain lower class in 1930's Germany grew up saying "Untermensch" and "Judenschwein", was it understandable because they grew up with Lutheranism hatred of the Jews now as if somehow this makes it okay?
I mean clearly if people say it why on earth is he then not suitable for the party?
He needs to make up his mind.
Can somebody help Nigel get his own foot out of his mouth.

Here we go again! In the U.S., the term "chink" is mainly reserved for the Vietnam vets who fought in the Vietnam war ... that said, there are many similarities between the Vietnamese and the Chinese, but ultimately ...
you should not use terminology that some groups find offensive unless you mean to put yourself out there as opposed to those groups.
Otherwise, you're just being an unintentional dick, right? Which is the worst kind of dick. Either that, or you're just broadcasting to everyone else that you're stupid.

Do we ever hear what other people call us whites?
I worked for an Asian woman once and she and I got on quite well, she told me that they do a "cockney accent" and call each other "John" when mocking white people.
Can't say I was offended.
Words are words.
What if someone called you "chalky" becasuse of your skin colour? Would it bother you?
My best friend is Asian indian. When she cooks a curry she says she smells like a proper indian - we both find it hilarious.
for the record I have said "chinky" when ordering a Chinese.
I'm pretty sure no chinese person was around to hear it, but I didn't feel absolutely terrible for saying it either.

Eddie things agreed in humor are miles apart from where people use terminology to deliberately offend.
What may not bother you certainly does bother others.
For a start all black people are constantly judged for the colour of their skin, the moment they walk out of the door in many countries due to stereotypes, all because of words.
The point you have to ask yourself is why would you want to use such terminology knowing it does affect some people, to the point we know where words of hate lead to, violence and death and on the receiving end people even end up committing suicide?
There is no problem where people mutually take the piss out of each others identity, the problem starts, where again the word chinky was devised as a derogatory term, with the intention of offending others.
What you are saying is that because some people are thick skinned we should apply this to everyone? Sorry it does not work that way, where again nobody should be deliberately insulted just because of a nationality they belong too..
Anyway the main point here was the contradiction from Farage. On the one hand he is trying to defend derogatory words being used to offend whilst also saying no UKIP member who uses them will be tolerated in the party.

Yes all true I guess didge.
I suppose I only mingle with intelligent and secure people so....
Yes Farage shouldn't be defending this in any way!

Re: Nigel Farage Defends Use Of Words 'Chinky' And 'Poofter'
I agree with Bras, intent is a big determinator of whether I get offended at a racial comment. I can joke about it but if someone of another ethnicity calls me anti-white slurs intending to be antagonistic, I can't say I'm happy about it by any stretch. And I also don't buy into the idea that if one black person, for example, does something wrong to a white person, that justifies some other white person doing something wrong to some other black person.
And sure, joking among friends is one thing -- but Kerry Smiff was giving an interview to a newspaper reporter! This is the rundown the paper gave of what Smiff had to say:
* Mocks ‘f***ing disgusting old pooftahs’ who belong to a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning group, calling them ‘BLTs’ – bacon, lettuce and tomato.
* Jokes about ‘shooting peasants’ and mocks Ukip activist Lucy Bostick for printing ‘boring c**p’ on her leaflets.
* Refers to a woman with a Chinese name as a ‘Chinky.’
* Makes baseless claims about party leader Farage accepting a bribe to promote a Ukip ally over another rival.
* Calls Ukip’s immigration spokesman Steve Woolfe a ‘f***ing carpetbagger and a***hole.’

And yet people like that turn up again and again and again, for years running now, in a party that insists it just wants to lower the numbers on immigration and that it doesn't serve a racist, sexist, anti-gay agenda.

Bingo Ben, and now Farage has told UKIP members to omit they are from UKIP on Twitter.
Talk about damage limitation, proving the very point you make above.
Why omit who you are, unless you have something to hide.?

I am holding Fire in Farage atm as you can't blame someone for what someone else says - that's fair and true enough.
The fact he's pulled the guy up,over it is fair enough imo

I don't know, he's probably just covering his ass. With movements like this, I always wonder why, if they're not hateful, they seem to keep drawing the hateful people to themselves over and over. There's something about this party that appeals to bigots, that's for sure.

What I find quite amusing is that nobody has mentioned Nigel Farage's implication that people from Council estates are a bit "rough".
