HUNDREDS of veterans gathered for the last time today to honour the dead of Britain’s forgotten war – more than 60 years after it ended.

The Duke of Gloucester led the unveiling of the Korean War Memorial outside the Ministry of Defence in central London.

It honours the 81,084 British personnel - many of them national servicemen - who served in the war between 1950 and 1953.

Britain lost 1,106 killed in action while thousands were wounded and 1,060 became prisoners of war.

The memorial which has a Portland stone obelisk on a base of Welsh slate behind the statue is a gift from the Republic of Korea.

As 500 guests including 320 veterans admired the bronze statue of a British soldier, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said: “We must never allow the notion of a ‘forgotten war’ to take hold.

“Where Britain’s armed forces put their lives on the line for their country, this must be commemorated, and in the right way.

“The Korean War was the first ever UN action against aggression, and so has enormous international significance.
