So what brings you here?

I was kidnapped, knocked out, tied up and thrown in the trunk of a Checker cab. When I woke up I was in NewsFix. I'm a bit groggy, but I think I like it here.

So glad to see you here, Jane! And I notice we have two other new members as well, phobos_anomaly and stretchman. Welcome, you two -- I don't know who you are, but please don't be shy, and introduce yourselves!

Sorry for all the exclamation points! I just get excited very easily! I have work to do, gotta go!

Oh, and to answer Jane's question, what brings me here is how boring and monotonous it became over at NH. I felt like I was having the same endless, repetitive debate.

That's a major feature here at NF -- we're not going to allow anybody to threadjack the forums and make everything into a discussion of their favorite topic. You know how no matter what the subject of a discussion was to begin with, at NH it always became a discussion of libertarianism/Ron Paul/ancap/the gun in the room? Not here, not on my watch.

Mind you, no topic is banned. But users who make it a ... habit ... of continuously steering threads to the few things they like talking about will see my mad face:

After being away from Short News for a long time, I post a new short news and get an invite here (thanks Lurker). I do see lots of names I know from Short News, so I'm guessing this is to give a better moderated place for commenting about news?

I actually had a dream last night that I was checking out NF on my iphone and saw that someone whose name begins with a "c" and ends with an "arnold" had signed up and started trolling here, and I was thinking what a pain it was going to be to have to ban someone from the mobile site on a little 4-inch screen ...

I just noticed that SN is really quiet. Apparently the last news was mine posted last week. Did everyone just desert it? Kind of a shame really.

It's a long story. The first stupid thing they did was eliminate all the hard working volunteer admins. They fired Kate (Lois Lane), the only actual paid admin that ran the show. Now the admins they have left are all hired employees. They never knew what they were doing. IMO We had a few ultra right wing political types who did nothing but run everybody down and pick a fight. They ran a lot of people off. Then there is Facebook. Facebook has destroyed many a good website forum.

... so in response, Lois, two other former SN admins and another guy who's an anarchocapitalist decided to start NewsHabit, which was great at first, but then the ancap guy and one of his friends starting to turn every other thread into a discussion about anarcho-capitalism or related topics like libertarianism. That turned a lot of people off and basically ruined NewsHabit, and it also inspired the top rule here:

"Feel free to share and discuss anything you're interested in, but please note that members who consistently hijack threads to steer them toward discussions of their favorite "pet" topics may be asked to leave."

Now NewsHabit is a desert too, with the last story having been posted months ago and not even any comments within the past week, I believe.

For an example of how they turned so many discussions to the one thing they wanted to talk about, I can think of none better than a story I posted about how Republicans were hiring a consultant to help them stop saying controversial things about rape. By the second comment, one of them has turned the discussion into "forcing people to do something against their will," one of the libertarians' favorite things to talk about:

Shame about SN but all good things must come to an end or they just die on us.

I've read enough lit on anarchy to act as newsfix's anarchocapitalist. Only I don't know if I can force myself to think illogically enough to be able support some of their arguments.

Hey everyone. Not sure how many will remember me, but Lurker invited me over from Shortnews. Good to see some familiar names and hopefully we'll have another new/forum site much like Shortnews was in its prime, but without all the HAVOC666 .
