Syria: Snipers shooting at U.N. inspectors
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/26/syria-un-inspectors-snipers_n_3816041.htmlBEIRUT/AMMAN, Aug 26 (Reuters) - U.N. chemical weapons inspectors in Syria met and took samples from victims of an apparent poison gas attack in a rebel-held suburb of Damascus on Monday after the U.N. team themselves survived a sniper attack that hit a vehicle in their convoy.
A Syrian doctor told Reuters from the suburb, Mouadamiya, that investigators from the United Nations had crossed the frontline from the centre of the capital, which remains under the control of President Bashar al-Assad's forces.
The U.N. said one vehicle in its convoy had been crippled by shooting by "unidentified snipers", but mentioned no injuries. Their arrival meant whoever fired had failed to turn them back.
With Western powers considering military strikes, despite vocal opposition from Assad and his Russian and Iranian allies, any evidence to support rebel claims that government forces fired gas-laden rockets five days ago that killed hundreds of civilians will be a key element in arguments for peace or war.

.....And it's going to kick off big time now because there have been reports of a further chemical attack

Re: Syria: Snipers shooting at U.N. inspectors
....Still no news on the vote over whether to back military action this evening in the commons but imo we should stay out of it and whilst i find the use of chemical weapons to be a war crime i really don't think that this country can afford another war and that we need to be concentrating on our own troubles.
It's been mentioned that it will probably be the US and France that will be doing the air strikes in the end so what do you guys think about the current situation?

I for one support limited military intervention from the U.S. and any nation that has signed the chem. weapons treaty, but not a full-scale war. Air strikes on suspected chemical weapons compounds should do the trick, I would hope. We certainly don't need an escalating war, but we can't turn our backs on the use of chemical weapons imo.
Re: Syria: Snipers shooting at U.N. inspectors
Well we are out of the conflict now and tbf the vast majority of the British public had no appetite for another war we just don't have the money and i think we got a bit of a kicking over our involvement with the Iraq war and Tony Blair is accused of being a war criminal etc.Ben_Reilly wrote:I for one support limited military intervention from the U.S. and any nation that has signed the chem. weapons treaty, but not a full-scale war. Up yours Cameron! You are making all of these cuts but seem to think that you have money to fight a bloody war!

Anyone would know...
leaving any conflict or any form violence to continue is only going to breed more trouble.
The bodies that be, Arab league first and foremost could have and SHOULD have intervened and could still, but something is stopping them:?: If their action was failing then the UN could have implemented a way forward, but all they did was stand idly by whilst the situation in Syria got worse and more out of control. Positive action should have been taken whilst protesters were being killed.
As is the way with these things, the west lets it escalate to a point where they decide to strike with weapons, kill more people and leave behind total chaos after toppling the leader and creating a new generation of west hating kids. Still, it's a good situation for some, petrol prices have risen again and the price of stocks in the likes of Lockheed Martin and Grumman have shot through the roof.
Peace sells but who's buying?

Re: Syria: Snipers shooting at U.N. inspectors
Excellent points, Jane. It's amazing that more local organizations haven't seemed to care about this situation.
Yeah, but what does "deterrent" measures actually mean, if not military action? As for that:
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2013/09/20139213147676742.htmlThe head of the Arab League has said military intervention in Syria is not an option - a further blow to the United States' efforts to act over a chemical weapons attack in Damascus last month.
Following emergency meetings in Cairo on Monday, secretary-general, Nabil Elaraby, said the League held the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad responsible for the August 21 attack, but a "military option is out of the question".
He said that the United Nations inspectors who had investigated the attack site "do not have the powers to say who committed this... so, all the inspectors will say is that chemical weapons have been used".
His comments came a day after the League stopped short of calling for military intervention in Syria, instead asking the UN and the international community to take "deterrent" measures under international law.
Yeah, but what does "deterrent" measures actually mean, if not military action? As for that:
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57600384/syria-resolution-authorizing-military-force-fails-in-u.n-security-council/The five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council failed to reach an agreement Wednesday on a British-proposed resolution that would authorize the use of military force against Syria, as the U.N. chief pleaded for more time for diplomacy.
It is so hard to judge what is going on.
Main stream media don't give all of the facts as we know.
Here is something else that has not been reported http://rt.com/news/ballistic-launch-eastern-mediterranean-343/

Re: Syria: Snipers shooting at U.N. inspectors
Britain has pledged 42M in aid to Syria...TBF...Why are we giving foreign aid to there when are own citizens on low incomes are having to rely on food banks
Aren't the Arab states very rich?
Why don't they deal with the problem FFS!
