Pope Francis to Jews: We’re all under attack now

VATICAN CITY (RNS) Christians are suffering the same “savage attacks” once suffered by Jews, Pope Francis told a delegation of prominent Jewish leaders, according to the head of the World Jewish Congress.

Ronald S. Lauder led a delegation of 40 Jewish leaders who met Francis at his Santa Marta residence late Wednesday (Sept. 17) to mark Rosh Hashanah, the upcoming Jewish New Year.

Lauder told reporters on Thursday that the WJC and the pope were “in absolute agreement” in condemning militant attacks on Christians in the Middle East and said the pope had compared the persecution to attacks on the Jews.

“Francis told us privately that he believes we are in World War III, but unlike the first two world wars, instead of happening all at once, this war is coming in stages,” Lauder said.

He has a very valid point on the persecution part, not WW3 though, but his sentiments are very true that little is being done to stem the rising tide of persecution, to some of the oldest Christian communities.

I know people keep going on about how little will be achieved by fighting back at IS and other extremist groups, but inaction also allows many to continue appalling suffering and no claim to what the west does is an excuse for the suffering received by Christians in the Middle East. It is time more Arab nations did more to protect Christian communities, who have done nothing wrong. All know the great persecution many Muslims are receiving from extremists groups, but Christians and other minority religious groups have little or no protection in some Middle East countries and their plight is very much ignored.
