That is a real shame and so sad that something so magnificent built t all those years ago should be destroyed in this way.
Sadly it's not the first time this has happened to a historic pier being burnt down. Hopefully they may be able to restore it back to its original glory but looking at those pictures it looks really bad so possibly not.

I'm sure they will rebuild. Even Windsor Castle has needed it.

Apparently caused by an electrical fault. It's a real shame, piers are a huge part of British seaside heritage but maintaining them is expensive

The worrying thing is that British piers burning down has become something of a habit.
It does seem that this may be one of the easier projects to repair and restore, and it appear to have the full backing of the council.
Shame , it is a nice pier, enyed a few trips there in my youth.

Why??? Unbelievable
A fire that ripped through Eastbourne Pier is now feared to have been started deliberately.
The blaze on Wednesday afternoon destroyed about a third of the 1,000ft (300m) long structure.
Sussex Police said the force had received information suggesting the fire was started by someone "either deliberately or accidently".
The BBC understands there is "clear evidence" the fire was sparked in an arson attack.
At its height, up to 80 firefighters, together with RNLI crews, tackled the blaze on the 144-year-old, Grade II-listed pier.

Why? Why would someone do that?
Those piers are our heritage not to mention the fact that someone could have died

Morning Bee, reports here state that the cause of the fire is believed to be suspicious
The fire that gutted much of Eastbourne Pier is being treated as suspicious, Sussex Police have said.
"As a result of our investigation we have received information to suggest that the fire may have been started by someone, either deliberately or accidentally, and our investigation is now focusing on that line of enquiry," said Detective Inspector Mark O'Brien.

Re: Eastbourne Pier on fire......../.Breaking
Suspicious cause and origin. The most common of motives is money: insurance. But Bee's thesis about a disgruntled employee is also high on the list.
I wish I knew more about what information the cops have received.
