My friends, it is time to lighten up by a metric fuck-ton
Yes, there are things to take seriously in this tired old world of ours. But all our earnestness is not going to make them better.
Let us be happy warriors. Let us forever side ourselves with the jokers and the mirth-makers, forever against the doomsayers, the fuck-dick-shits, and the fucking asshole clown-dick pricks.
Let us rally our smileys and our silly songs and our goofy photos against the forces that would kill, maim, defenestrate and generally mess up our buzzes.
Let us forever rally and endeavor toward that eternal horizon, the perfect vibe.
And let us forever decline the assholes the chance to get us down.

Thanks Fluffy and Cass, I am biased because I am his Mummy but he's rather cute. His name is Max
@Veya - we have a family of mice living under our decking. They come out at dusk and eat all the seed that the birds have dropped from the bird table. Seriously cute x
These pics were taken of them last year and they are actually on the bird table itself, cheeky devils

THEY wouldn't last too long if my Sammy saw them !!!
:::cass:::
My brother and his wife had nine cats when he was in graduate school at Berkeley. (I used to study with him at his apartment in the evenings.) The cats lounged on the mantle, backs of sofas and chairs, and atop bookcases, etc.
One evening a benumbed mouse stumbled out into the middle of the living room.
No mercy.

That was hysterical! ::D::
But LOTR rocks, truly! So what if this is lots of walking and strolling.Tis nice to walk and stroll
Also that's the whole point of the ring,it gives everlasting life and destroys its owner in the process but the owner still needs it (or think they need it).It is symbolic of power,it destroys.
To be fair Bilbo Baggins got very old very quickly once he finally gave it up..the ring had its compensations!

I was calling her "hey cat" and "stoopid cat!" and "come here, cat.." for the first couple of weeks that she chose to live here, when my younger niece said "All cats should have a name. She looks like a Sammy to me.."
I said to my niece that since Sammy is a girl, it has to be short for "Samantha" in that case; and so Sammy found herself with a new name as well as a new home.
Aww.Your niece was right, she DOES look like a Sammy ::D::

The Lord of the Rings might have been one decent book, it could have left out the Elvish dictionary at the end of Book 3 as well.
As it is, it takes far too long for a story that ends with

Plus it's just not really that good of a book
I'm sure it was great for it time and it was the first to put a lot of 'fantasy' ideas to paper.. but if read and honestly compared to many fantasy novels that have been written since it is a very average story.

IT SHOULD also be remembered that a lot of authors build build their little fantasy worlds and universes upon what has gone before...
A lot of the more recent epic Fantasy/SF series and would not even exist without the groundwork laid down by the likes of Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert Heinlen, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clark, Phillip K. Dick, Kurt Vonnegut Jnr, Terry Pratchett and company..
(AS for a lot of those appendices and notes in TLOTR that Ben complains about ~ you don't have to read them, if you don't want to ~ and the trilogy IS available in a 1200 page single volume.. ).
Still Compare the works Tolkien to Richard Knaak...
in Knaaks Word of Warcraft trilogy the entire story of lord of the rings occur in half of one of the 3 books (he is responsible for most of Warcraft, Diablo and Starcraft stories) The scope of his stories is vast, multi dimension time travelling dragon gods and all. and to make it crazier the amount of small almost meaningless links between the games and books in phenomenal.
Also Famous for the Dragon lance and Dragon Realm series

WASN'T "World of Warcraft" reverse-engineered from the computer game ???
no Warcraft the original had a very basic story
the makers wanted to do a Warhammer game (you know the table top game with the little models)
but Citadel the company that owns that said NOPE so they made a generic Humans Versus Orc Story..
Warcraft 2 Started to create a more in depth story and went beyond humans good Orcs bad so that both sides had nice and bad aspects By Warcraft 3 they realised they needed Professional Help as they started to develop characters and Knaak came on board.. and thus the story evolved into an really in-depth political analysis of slavery and persecution of those that look different... there is lots of parallels to the real world Environmental impacts (the Orcs are actually staunch Environmentalists ::D:: ), poverty industrialisation and racism/xenophobia.
"World of Warcraft" Builds an entire multidimensional universe out of those stories and games (note: original games were top down view strategy games, WoW is an Online Role playing game. Very different game play)
Blizzard have a number of Authors working for them WoW probably makes more money every month in sign up fees alone than a novel over the life of an Author so they do get the TOP fantasy Authors around today.
Jeff Grubb is another really good Author Blizzard have he is responsible for the best of the Starcraft books Highly Political comparison to the 'media industry' today and its effects on the political climate

I understand and appreciate your "standing on the shoulders of giants" argument, and we should appreciate the groundwork that's been laid before ... but giving that credit doesn't mean you have to give more credit than what's due, right? As much as American R&B musicians enabled the rise of The Beatles, I'd still much rather listen to anything by the Fab Four over something that paved the road for them
