Uk v US sport
You have American football, we have rugby.
You have baseball, we have rounders.
We have cricket, you have baffled expressions.
You have WWE and TNA wrestling.
We have Saturday nights outside nightclubs.
But do you guys have sudden influxes of folk desperate to try out the popular sport of the moment?
During Wimbledon fortnight, it is impossible to book a tennis court.
During the golf Open, book a round of golf? Forget it!.
Out of general interest , are the American public as obsessive as Brits at emulating their sporting heros

yes.....soccer is all the craze now......will last till the American football playoffs.....we are very like the French when trying a new sport - we rush out and buy all the top knot kit so we look good and the most expensive equipment then it tester's in the garage after we lose interest 2 months in
but my boys have always stuck with footie (its the real name fgs) and I dread to think how much over 21 years I have spent in kits, boots, replica shirts, posters, bed linen......I could've retired to the Bahamas by now.

Oh, absolutely, and it goes beyond sports. You know you can't find a spot in an archery class now, anywhere?

Sportsmen aren't heroes, BAndy ~ sporting "idols" is the much better phrase, in this context..
Obviously BA doesn't follow too many other sports besides Football ?
Certainly not Rugby, cricket, golf, any horse events, mountain biking, triathlon, sailing, snowboarding, motor cycling, any of the 'martial arts', darts or lawn bowls..
ALL sports that Brit's used to be half-way decent at, but not so much these days.
WHO are the cricketing record holders, RAndy ?
A Jamaican, an Indian, a Sri Lankan, a Kiwi, a couple of Aussies - and an Englishman !
More cricket and rugby titles held by Oz, NZ or South Africa overall than England, it would seem..
Brit's invented : Archery as a 'sport', darts, Football, rounders, cricket, Rugby, steeplechase, golf.
Americans : Baseball, Basketball, American Football, Softball, Triathlons, Mountain Bikes, Snowboards, "freestyle frisbee", Yo-Yo's..
Aussies ? : Aussie Rules football, Polocrosse, Campdrafting, Cane Toad racing...
D'ya think maybe Aussie Rules football, Baseball, American football and softball might just be English games with a rule or two changed?
Triathlon is considered by some to have its beginnings in 1920s France.[8] According to triathlon historian and author Scott Tinley (and others[9]), the origin of triathlon is attributed to a race during the 1920s–1930s that was called variously "Les trois sports", "La Course des Débrouillards", and "La course des Touche à Tout." This race is held every year in France near Joinville-le-Pont, in Meulan and Poissy.
The history of the mountain bike includes contributions from cyclo-cross in Europe and the Roughstuff Fellowship[2] in the UK. The name "mountain bike" first appeared in print in 1966 as "mountain bicycle". The mountain bike was a modified heavy cruiser bicycle used for freewheeling down mountain trails.

I'd say the only two truly "American-invented" sports are basketball and volleyball. Interestingly enough, both started as indoor sports invented within a few years of one another, by school phys-ed teachers trying to figure out what to make kids do in bad weather ...
Still, they've evolved into tremendous contests. For example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7ktlGGweeA
(that one is arguably far more incredible!)

Many British schools teach that England invented soccer as part of their Modern History curriculum. Maybe it's a view held outside of England, but I have my doubts.

Those questions are always murky, because you have the question of was the game invented, or did it evolved from other games as people gradually refined the rules? And then you have the influences, like how it's hard to imagine volleyball coming about without tennis existing already. And, some games appear to have been played that were similar to each other but were invented independently -- there were South American natives who played a game that was like a cross between soccer (complete with the no-hands rule) and basketball, in that the goal was an elevated, unguarded hoop ...
Re: Uk v US sport
I think that England were the first country to form a football association and put rules in place on how football is run.
The Scottish cup is generally regarded as the oldest official football trophy in the world.
It was Scot that introduced football in Brazil.

Gosh, talk about a legacy with many happy returns (excluding 2014 unfortunately).

And the US archery clubs also got increased female interest back in 1999/2000 when Geena Davis made the final 32 in the national team, (while she didn't make the cut for the 16 person train-on team to get to the final 8, because she was already famous she became the Sydney Olympics and the USA's "honorary ambassador" for the sport..).
You know why that skinny teenaged actress doesn't raise a sweat holding that bow at full draw ?
BECAUSE it's draw-weight is only 8 pounds !
(And note the use of the Index finger to hold the arrow in place there..).
She couldn't reach a target with that bow, let alone have the arrows stick in ! Apparently they also have a normally weighted bow (probably around 20 lbs?) for their regular archery scenes..
under 50pounds draw is consider a toy
And We're allowed them with out a license..
80+pound is Considered a deer/man killer and that is hard just to draw let alone aim

Aussie Rules(AFL) is a bit different... closest thing to it is Gaelic football and AFL was official before Gaelic football (but variations of Gaelic are obviously older)
And NFL/Gridiron is very different.
We play more Rugby League than Rugby Union.

Re: Uk v US sport
Been reading up on the history of the various football codes, and the delineations seem quite a bit murkier than a lot of people apparently think. They were all born out of "mob football," a really violent and informal game that included kicking, carrying, throwing ... along with tackling, shin-hacking, holding, and very probably punching and biting (biting is still said to go on in American gridiron, never mind the face masks).
Association football, soccer, what we watched in the World Cup was only codified in 1863, with the rugby, Australian rules and gridiron rules all emerging within the next 20 years or so after that.
In fact, the original 13 rules of the FA included this: "A goal shall be won when the ball passes between the goal-posts or over the space between the goal-posts (at whatever height)," meaning there was no cross-bar in early association football. And shortly thereafter those who rejected the FA's rules went on to codify into rugby's versions.
In the meantime, gridiron rules were codified in 1873, and by 1892 gridiron was being played professionally in the U.S. Australian rules were codified in 1859 and professional matches were being played in the 1890s.
And the Canadians took the gridiron rules, modified them a little and invented their own Canadian Football League, which has had players go back and forth between in and the U.S.'s NFL.
So in reality, nobody actually took association football and bastardized it into any other code (unless you want to count the adaptations for indoor/gymnasium soccer). All modern football codes trace back to informal, unprofessional, and rather chaotic mob football.
