90-Year-Old Dragged Off Street And Raped

Police in Rochdale have launched an investigation after a 90-year-old woman was attacked in the street and raped.

The woman was attacked as she walked to a butchers in Spotland Road around 6.45am on Tuesday.

When she came round she walked to the shop and they called the police.

Superintendent Alistair Mallen said: "I am sure the entire community will share our revulsion at this.

"The victim has been through an horrific ordeal and we are all hoping she can make a full recovery.

"She is now being supported by experienced officers and we are doing everything possible to reassure her that we will catch the man responsible.

"This kind of attack is thankfully so rare that it will naturally cause a huge amount of concern in the community.

"I now want people, including the criminal fraternity, to imagine if that had been your mum or grandma. I want to harness these feelings and use them to help the police do their job - catch this man and put him before the courts.

"It may not have struck you as significant at the time, but please, if you saw anything or anyone that you think could be relevant then please call the police."

Police want to hear from people who saw the victim - and potentially her attacker - on Tuesday morning.

The victim is white and was wearing a white summer dress with a flower print and a cardigan.

The attacker is described as a white male but no other details were available.

Absolutely shocking. The community must be very nervous with someone like that still on the lose.

It sounds like it's down to eyewitnesses (if there are any) to determine whether this "person" gets caught.

Detectives have confirmed they are still treating an attack on a 90-year-old woman as a rape inquiry.

The victim has told police that she was attacked as she walked to her local butchers on Spotland Road in Rochdale and police are continuing to investigate the incident.

Officers defended their decision to go public with the woman’s claims ahead of the tests saying they had a ‘duty of care’ to do so.

The forensic tests so far have found no evidence that she was raped.

Specially-trained officers are continuing to work with the 90-year-old lady and offer her support.

They said they have one key witness who has come forward to give them an account of what happened.

Forensic experts are now trying to pinpoint the exact location where the attack took place. They are also studying CCTV footage.

Supt Alistair Mallen said: “First of all I would like to say a really big thank-you. We’ve been overwhelmed by the Rochdale public and further afield in terms of providing information to the police.

“We can not rule out the victim has not been raped. We are still investigating this as worst case scenario and rape is the worst sexual offence.

“From her state of dress of when she came round it is clear a sexual assault has taken place. We are not discounting anything, it is about attention to detail.

“You have to believe your victims. Rape victims think long and hard about getting support. This is a sprightly 90-year-old and I believe her. We are really satisfied she is on the button.

It probably will. Poor soul, although they cant find evidence of rape is clear something terrible happened to her

I think assault would have been a more sensible crime to categorise it as though.

Vera Hoad – Chichester

The rape of Vera Hilda Hoad, 11, was so violent before she was strangled that police believe her attacker’s penis may have been damaged in the assault. A hundred and fifty soldiers at a barracks near the crime scene, a field near a mental hospital at Chichester, Sussex, were accordingly paraded, and inspected without success.
At the time, Monday, February 25th, 1924, one of America’s most violent serial killers was thought to be in England, in the Sussex area, and subsequent research suggests that he was possibly Vera's killer. He was Earl Leonard Nelson, suspected of the deaths of over 20 women across the States and Canada. Philadelphia-born Nelson had a receding forehead, protruding lips and huge hands – hence he was nicknamed the Gorilla Murderer.
He was hanged in Canada in January, 1928, the British authorities having failed to get a stay of execution so that he could be questioned about the murder of Vera Hoad, and also about the murder of another girl, Nancy Clarke, in Birkenhead.
