Hundreds of post offices have been secretly shut – despite Government promises to save them.

David Cameron pledged to put them at the heart of his flagship Big Society project when the Tory-led coalition came to power.

But figures from the Post Office show 504 rural and urban branches have been “temporarily” closed. More than 300 have been shut for at least two years.

Classifying them as “temporary” means they do not show in official closure statistics.

When he became PM four years ago Mr Cameron claimed post offices would be the “front office of government”.

But postmasters say they are struggling to make a profit because ministers have taken away so many services they used to provide.

Figures obtained by Labour show 318 post offices had been “temporarily” shut for two years or more in 2012-13, up from 168 in 2010-11.

Labour’s postal affairs spokesman Ian Murray said: “These figures cast fresh doubt on the Government’s commitment to our post offices.”

The Post Office, headed by £250,000-a-year chief executive Paula Vennells, insists it is committed to maintaining the network at its current size with at least 11,500 branches. The network has shrunk from 14,300 since 2007.

Ms Vennells said: “The reason we classify branches as temporarily closed, rather than permanently, is there is always the potential for a service to be restored to the area should circumstances enable it.”
