First topic message reminder :

Cant see this on a search so thought I would start it.

I think this is a difficult one - on first thoughts it looks simple but the more you think about it the more confused it gets.

Not a lot.

A salad, maybe a slice of chicken, couple of apples, black tea, a banana. Not much more than that, all day. It made me very ill.

Definitely no doughnuts! Took me six months of arguing with the doc to get him to test me. Was a nightmare.

So anyway, there's no suggestion that this chap had an underactive thyroid. If he couldn't do the job, there was no point keeping him on, right?

So anyway, obesity should not be included as a disability. One does not suddenly become obese overnight, and there should be ample time to do something about weight gain if it's affecting one's job.

If I couldn't do my job any more because of a medical issue, I wouldn't expect my employer to start building new toilets or let me sit around all day.

I have no opinion.  I am here purely for fun.  If I discuss anything with Handsome I call it sport.,  better than going to the gym.

What I will do is back my friends when they are being attacked.  Sexy MAMMA is another very good friend that has been been spurned of the boards. I do not come on here to wage war on anyone, and very few do. very few must be in the single numbers...

Accept you and I both know that I do have an underactive thyroid, as has someone else we know, and Rags asked a question and I answered with facts, which the someone else will tell you is the truth:

Raggamuffin wrote:So if someone becomes obese because of their thyroid, they take medication and it gets sorted, yes?

No, because the thyroid might be unstable, might develop a tumour, might be difficult to treat be because you can take the thyroxine but your body might not process it properly. Thyroxine is T3, that your body converts to T4, but it might not convert it. Very complicated and can change in a very short time and then change back again. Too much Thyroxine can damage your heart, too little can mean your system starts shutting down.

It was gerber who was being annoying really. I didn't ask for a lecture from her, and I didn't ask her to be so patronising. Sassy did of course get snidy with me earlier on in the thread.

Anyway, I have noticed that Sassy must be agreed with generally, otherwise she gets arsy and extremely arrogant, even when discussing topics where people are giving opinions rather than facts.

So then, what do people think is reasonable when making allowances for obese people (or disabled people)? This man apparently couldn't do a lot of things which were involved in his job, so is it fair to his employer that they have to keep someone on who can't do the job?

Re building disabled toilets in installing lifts or whatever, that's probably not a problem in a large company with modern premises, but what about other smaller companies where space is limited and/or it would be too expensive to start putting in lifts or new toilets?

Lets get some light heartedness back and some fun!

You might be prepared for a pervert to write those things about you.   I'm not.

Sassy if you dont want comment passed on your size then dont put your picture on the forum its that simple.
You dont have to do that or tell everyone all your medical and personal history. You choose to do that and once its out there its out there.

Your absolutely right Sassy..I'm on thyroxin myself Sassy, have been for a good few years for under active thyroid, and I've to have blood samples taken to check all is well and that the dose is fine, also have blood taken for my lithium levels too.

I often wish I was over active with the thyroid instead!

There is standing up for yourself and there is abuse. You were abusive.Fred was taking the  pee out of you. If you cant handle it stick him on ignore. Your comment about his wife is out of order and can no way be classed as defending yourself.
Are we off down this route again? Only those Sassy approves of can post? Killed one forum with that attitude, be an awful shame to kill another one dont you agree? Sassy you are going to have to  accept that not everything is as you see it and not everything is about you.

Indeed Sass, I was also howling at the one addressed to Ben the other week, it went something like...

"Oh Ben dear, you have it all wrong and are trusting the wrong people , if only you could open your eyes xxxxx" .

What if it's an old building? What if there's nowhere to put a disabled toilet? It's not a question of hassle, it's a question of practicalities and huge expense.

There are already rules and procedures in place to allow the provision of a disabled toilet - and the expenses are kept to a minimum. There is even government help for smaller firms to meet the costs.

It is illegal to fire someone because they have become disabled and need reasonable adaptations.

What if there's no room? Some companies have to keep their floor space as small as possible. I'm thinking of places where I've worked where there's no way they could adapt the place for that kind of thing. What if there are steep stairs and no room for a lift?

Who decides what is "reasonable" anyway? At what point does it become completely impractical to keep someone on who has become disabled? What about retail work or other manual work? If someone can't do any part of the job, what's the point of them being there?

Question

had it been a problem until Mc Donalds appeared ?

Exactly

Never saw a fat Jew at Auschwitz did we??

However weight related problems did become common in those who survived the camps because the years on starvation diets screwed up their metabolism - and because once they were free to eat they did eat.

Unless you are proposing the government forcibly keep everyone on starvation rations your point is valueless in this discussion.

I have read that thyroid problems can increase appetite.
Maybe that is The reason for any weight gain.....?

The other thing is that a lot of work contracts are temporary, so the employer doesn't have to have an excuse to lay someone off if, for example, they decide the can't afford them or there's not enough work. If someone is disabled and is on a temporary contract, are they still able to lay that person off without breaking the law?
