Tough PE lessons for under-11s in school sport shake-up
PE lessons in primary schools will be dramatically toughened up amid fears hundreds of thousands of under-11s can barely run, jump, throw or catch because of poor standards in the subject, the Telegraph has learnt.
For the first time, a generation of specialist physical education teachers will be employed directly by state primaries in England to give pupils advanced exercise sessions, healthy living advice and more competitive sport.
More than 100 teachers will be sent into schools from September and thousands more will follow in coming years, it emerged.
The disclosure was made as one of the country’s leading experts on school sport warned today that PE classes in primaries often descend into little more than “playtime”.
Baroness Sue Campbell, chairman of the Youth Sport Trust and former head of UK Sport, likened lessons in many schools to an English teacher “throwing comics into a classroom” and sitting back while pupils read the Beano.

Long overdue this and thank goodness they are making changes

It's all about health and safety which is why children have been mollycoddled and made to play "soft" sports.
I not kidding, my son wasn't allowed to climb higher than a certain point on the apparatus (not that he minded, he hated climbing lol) but it was ridiculous!
As you know I worked in infant schools for quite a while and the amount of H&S issues we had to wade through sometimes just to get them outside to play simple games!!!!
It's little wonder teachers tear their hair out.
I think this is a good measure and only good can come out of it!

I know, it's ridiculous. Mind you I remember when my sons were small there was a period when the school banned sports day and all competitive sports because it wasn't fair on the losers!eddie wrote:It's all about health and safety which is why children have been mollycoddled and made to play "soft" sports.

Hahahaha Tess my son won his race one year and came out of the sports day saying "I won! I never got anything saying 'winner' on it!! The teacher said we were all winners.....but we wasn't....because I won!"
I had to explain to a very disgruntled 6 year old that his teacher was stupid and that there's only ever one winner as that's what a 'winner' is!!!

I know. they need to keep fit too, specially with all the crap additives that's in their food nowadays.feelthelove wrote:Tesstacious wrote:

My PE teacher was ex-Army. I think she thought she was still there! Bloody route marches, assault courses, the works. Was great training though. I can still climb a rope quicker than my daughter.

I exercise three times a week, high impact weight training, both me and my OH do.
I think it does your children good to see their parents keeping fit tbh.

Re: Tough PE lessons for under-11s in school sport shake-up
I think this generation of kids/teens are really unfit. They don't want to get off their phones long enough to exercise, they might miss a text! When my kids come to visit and I suggest a walk, their faces fill with horror. My daughter calls it "Challenge Anneka" and they give up before we're even halfway round the place.eddie wrote:I exercise three times a week, high impact weight training, both me and my OH do.

Hahahahahaha I can imagine!
My son, nearly thirteen, does his own exercises but if we suggest going for a walk.....well, he looks at us as though are mad too!!
