Most people believe Ukip contains racists, poll finds

The UK Independence party has a three-point lead for this month's European election – but most people think the party contains racists, according to an opinion poll.
Nigel Farage's party is on 29%, ahead of Labour on 26%, the Conservatives on 23% and Liberal Democrats on 10%.
But 27% of those surveyed thought Ukip was a party with "racist views" and "many racist members", while 35% thought that, while the party was not racist, it did "seem to attract some candidates or supporters with racist, extreme or odd views".
Some 26% said Ukip was not racist and their "more controversial candidates are just saying the things ordinary people actually think".
The poll came as Ukip suspended another would-be councillor for expressing extreme views on Twitter.
Harry Perry posted comments on Twitter describing the prime minister, David Cameron, as a "gay-loving nutcase", Muslims as "devil's kids" and homosexuality as "an abomination before God".
Farage accepted there were "some idiots" in the party as he condemned Perry's comments as "entirely inconsistent" with remaining in Ukip.
The YouGov poll for the Sun on Sunday suggested that while Tory and Labour supporters might back Farage later this month, they would switch back at the general election next year.
For the 2015 contest Labour has a three-point lead on 36% over the Conservatives on 33%, with Ukip on 15% and the Lib Dems on 10%.

I love that view by the 26% "only saying what ordinary people are thinking", so the rest are not ordinary to not share racist, homophobic, xenophobic views?

I didnt read it that way, I read it that 26% of people think UKIP were saying things that people are thinking but wont say for fear of accusatons of racism.

Well they've been at it for a while and it doesn't seem to have affected their popularity in the polls.

Funny thing, I just watched Ed Milliband on Sky sitting next to Nigel Farage talking about Cameron not wanting to include Farage in the debates. Milliband said he was happy for Farage to take part; he seemed quite friendly towards him... anyone think he's eyeing up the prospect of a coalition with UKIP it there's not an outright majority in the next election?

The establishment still dont get that UKIP and Nigel do not play by the same rules they do. By their rules Nigel not standing in Newark is a massive error, and if they were in his position they would see a coalition as desirable. They might expect him to go for a coalition - I suspect he would be far less likely to.

I think you'd have to be an idiot not to think that UKIP contains racists, when you see what comes out about them on a practically daily basis. If the media is out to "get" UKIP, UKIP makes it very easy on the media by allowing it to just quote what its candidates actually say and write.

Of course the real question is, is UKIP actually a racist party. I think the answer to that is more complicated, but I've always been uncomfortable with political parties that racists for whatever reason seem to flock to.

As for parties racists flock to - well if in the UK you take BNP membership as evidence of racism, the the party that attracts the most is Labour - in fact it is fairly common for Labour to take ex BNP members/candidates and fund them as Labour candidates getting them elected.

Yeah keep hearing that word for word from Nigel, that is also stating and down playing those caught out within UKIP

most definitely in my opinion

Nems what they have said is racist and homophobic, how can they fear being branded when such views are because of late some candidates have been homophobic and racist both views are intolerant in a decent society and if they think this is how some people think, great am sure there is, but not not what "ordinary" people think, as I have explained already. Anyone can have a view, but as candidates for local or main Government you can damage the reputation of a party. The more this happens the more it will have affect, not for an EU election which people are intent on making a protest vote but it will in a general election.

Between Labour and UKIP? I doubt it; UKIP would need I an average of 22% of the vote to pick up one seat (there is a website Dean put up which allows you to work it out)- and let's be realistic, 22% is not a realistic prospect in 2015. Far more likely is a LibLab coalition (or another LibCon), since even with half the vote they got last time the Liberals can expect to hold around 20 seats- that's the bastard result of our FPTP system....

I saw Miliband having such a discussion with Farage on the Andrew Marr show; more likely Ed was being cordial since it probably wont happen in any case Wink

Idiotic. You don't really understand how FPTP works do you? The current parties strong seats in heart lands (such as Cornwall for the Liberals; the home counties for the Tories; and the North for Labour) it takes a massive swing in the population for them to lose seats in those heartlands- which is why the Liberals have managed to hold a number of seats even when their vote was a much smaller portion. It is also why in spite of swings away from the Big 2 their hold on their own seats remains strong.

For UKIP to gain one seat the swing would have to be huge in one particular area, not the sweep over the whole country. FPTP is a lousy system; the Liberals should have well over a hundred seats if PR was in place but it isn't.

If the alliance party is very strong in one area of course it can have a seat; like the Greens.

Your comment on Labour just shows how much of a deranged numpty you are.

But the plain fact is,UKIP have helped alter British politics & that's why the 3 main parties are crapping themselves.Neither of those parties enjoys massive support anymore as people know that they are the same & speak with forked tounges.

That's why there was a hung parliament in the last GE & there is a good chance of another.

UKIP forced the 3 parties to acknowledge the immigration problem,which we all know exists but so many deny
& those parties hate with a vengence having to deal with immigration because they know it is a vote winner or loser.So in my mind thta's mission accomplished.

And while you all cast UKIP as racist,look at how many mixed race voters there are for UKIP.Look at the colour of the skin of the UKIP cover girl,I think her name is Lizzy Vaid.......She's half Indian.

Never in my life time have I seen a party that is so racist & so anti British as the Labour party. They literally hate white people & Britain.And the Tories/LibDems are only marginally behind.

In the future,children in schools will be taught the truth about this period of time & politics & will see that the existing 3 main parties were racist beyond belief.

Incorrect they vastly have still huge support, so not sure where you get that view from, if you mean the recent EU polls, that ignores the general elections polls placing UKiP at best at 15%
